2. Problem Statement
Planetlab Global Research Network that supports the development of new network Services since the beginning of 2003
more than 1000 researchers at top academic institutions and Industrial Research Labs have used PlanetLab to develop
new technologies for distributed storage Network mapping peer-to-peer systems distributed hash tables and query
processing's 530 nodes at 717 sites cloud computing.
Often used for problems involving a lot of number crunching which can be easily parallelizable.
Cloud computing is where an app does not access resources it requests directly rather than it accesses them through
something like a service so instead of talking to a specific hard drive for storage and the specific CPU for computation it
talks to some service that provides these resources the service than Maps any requests for the sources of its physical
resources in order to provide for the application.
3. State Of The Art
Planetlab is a group of computers available as a test bed for computer networking and distributed systems
research. Testbed is a platform for conducting rigorous transparent and replicable testing of scientific theories
computational tools and new technologies the main use of it is in favor of researches it allows them to experiment
with Network apps and services that benefit from distribution across a wide geographical area. PlanetLab is
designed to support network measurement.
Viewed in a broad sense the concept of grid and cloud computing seems to have similar features that cloud is the
same basic ideas as the grid, but scale down in some ways, scaled up in others and thoroughly democratized. Like
the grid, the cloud is a utility model that involves a dynamically growing and shrinking collection of heterogenous
Loosely coupled nodes all of which are aggregated together and present themselves to a client as a single pool of
compute and/or storage resources.
4. Objective
1) To encourage research to understand how to keep the benefits Planet lab provides while repositioning it
for future success.
2) When it comes to grid and cloud computing the two are often seen the same computing paradigm
under different names. The objective is to separate grid from cloud and provide a side-by-side
comparison and how they are assembled and what services are offered.
8. Conclusion of the report
In a word the concept of cloud computing is becoming more and more popular. I believe that cloud
computing will become main technology in a information life. Now the dream of grid Computing will be
realized by cloud computing. Grid Computing appears to be promising model specially focusing on
standardizing APIS, Security, interoperability, new business models and dynamic pricing systems for
complex services.
PlanetLab has been enormously successful but it could be even more so. Universal access everywhere in
the world is our future. I described the decisions that have been crucial in planetlab success but should be
rethought now that PlanetLab is successful.
9. Future Scope
Node Virtualization
Add an extra incentive where participants would be able to sell their measurements rather than "barter"
their service.
Adding emulation to PlanetLab nodes
Server Consolidation
Virtualization
