Men and Women
Some experts in the psychology field state that between men and women there are some differences
mainly in the communication area. For instance , when we communicate , they do it to discuss ideas and
solve problems . They tend to dominate conversations in social settings .Men tend to interrupt more often
than women. Women, on the other hand , communicate to make up relationships . They allow men to
interrupt and often they are less assertive . women are warmer to talk and listen as well as friendlier and
kinder than men Men and women have difficulties understanding one another. Their communication
styles are completely different and if they are not aware of it , it could cause problems in their relationships
,whatever they are.

BOYS AND GIRLS
Boys tend to play outside, in large groups that are hierarchically structured. Their groups have a leader who
tells others what to do and how to do it, and resists doing what other boys propose. It is by giving orders that
high status is negotiated. Another way boys achieve status is to take centre stage by telling stories and jokes,
and by challenging the, stories and jokes of others. Boys’ games have winners and losers and elaborate
systems of rules that are frequently the subjects of arguments. Finally, boys are frequently heard to boast
about their skills, likes and possessions, and argue about who is best at what.
Girls, on the other hand, play in small groups or pairs. The centre of a girl’s social life is her best friend.
Within the group, intimacy is key: differentiation is measured by relative closeness. In their most frequent
games, such as jump rope and hopscotch, everyone gets a turn. Many of their activities (such as playing with
dolls) do not have winners or losers. Although some girls are certainly more skilled than others, girls are
expected not to boast about it, or show that they think they are better than the others. Girls don’t give orders:
they express their preferences as suggestions, and suggestions are likely to be accepted.
Write if the statements are true or false

Most Popular College Majors For Women
According to the most recent survey, conducted annually by the University of California, Los Angeles,
undergraduates’ chief objective in life is to be financially well-off. The most popular college major for both
men and women, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s latest figures, is business. As an
undergraduate major, business is broad enough to offer several career possibilities. It equips students to
work in finance, sales, consulting, marketing and management positions.
Questions
1. What is the main objective of the undergraduates?
___________________________________________________
2. What is the most wanted major for both men and women ?
___________________________________________________
3. What positions can men and women get by graduating in business?
a) ________________________________
b) ________________________________
c) ________________________________
However, men still dominate many of the majors with the highest earning potential. Engineering ranks at
No. 3 on the list of men’s most popular majors, and 83.2% of students in the major are men. Similarly, men
make up the vast majority (82.4%) of computer and information science majors. This is another field that
will be in demand and well-paid.
1. Do men dominate the careers with the highest potential? Justify your answer
_______________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________
As may be expected, women do still dominate many of the traditionally “soft” majors. On the list of
women’s most popular majors, education (No. 4), English (No. 9) and liberal arts (No.10) rank far
above their positions on men’s list. These fields of study lend themselves to careers like teaching,
writing and editing, public relations or sales. While there are well-paid positions in these fields,
median salaries range between $35,000 and $55,000. Interestingly, the appeal of studying
education seems to be slipping. Over the last decade education degrees have decreased 3%, though
women still dominate the major and receive 85.4% of education degrees. For women it seems that
education is being supplanted by health, which could be a market advantage.
1. What are some examples of soft majors?

c) ______________________________________________
2. What careers paths do women usually get after getting a degree in soft majors?

3. Do women still pursue the education career? Justify your answer

Women Discrimination
It is estimated that over 700,000 people are trafficked each year although it is not known exactly
how many are women. Most of these women are trafficked for sexual exploitation. The most
disturbing is that in parts of the Middle East, “honor killings” are still practiced. These killings can
be brought on by women engaging in homosexual acts or sexual acts outside of marriage, wanting
to end or prevent and arranged marriage or even dressing too provocatively. In Turkey, there is no
protection for women being abused, there are no shelters or help for women in these dangerous
circumstances.
4. What are reason for honor killings in the middle east?
a) _______________________________________________
b) _________________________________________________
c) _________________________________________________
In Saudi Arabia women are not allowed to drive. Yemeni women are some of the least empowered
women in the world. In Nepal if a woman is raped or assaulted the perpetrators are not punished,
they aren't even arrested. These are all examples of extreme discrimination of women throughout
the world but we can find more subtle examples of discrimination here in the United States. Even
though females have higher education rates and work more than men in the same profession they
still get paid less in America.
5. What can women do in Saudi Arabia?
a) _________________________________________________
b) _________________________________________________
c) _________________________________________________
6. Do men make more money than women? Justify your answer

Communication Styles
Deborah Tannen's studies found these gender differences in communication styles
 Men tend to talk more than women in public situations, but women tend to talk more than
men at home.
 Women are more inclined to face each other and make eye contact when talking, while men
are more likely to look away from each other.
 Men tend to jump from topic to topic, but women tend to talk at length about one topic.
 When listening, women make more noises such as "mm-hmm" and "uh-huh", while men are
more likely to listen silently.
 Women are inclined to express agreement and support, while men are more inclined to
debate.
