This document discusses using Akka for IoT applications. “The Elements of Style” is one of the most important and foundational guidelines on how to write well. It has effectively summarized, in a list of seminal guidelines, how to harness the power of the English language to write high quality prose of almost any kind. In computing, we have similar guides for various technologies. Python offers “The Zen Of Python”, Ruby has “The Rails Doctrine”, and so on... One of the powers these documents wield is that they help serve as a “north star” that guides an entire community toward the same goals. I believe we need a similar guide for Kubernetes. It would describe how app developers and operators should think about and use the features in Kubernetes to build and deploy reliable, stable apps. Armed with such a guide, we could all hope to better understand the “essence” of Kubernetes in pursuit of building better cloud native apps. We don’t have anything like this today, but many in the Kubernetes community have strong, detailed opinions for what should go in this guide. Much of it is tribal knowledge or scattered in blog posts. In this talk, I’ll try to bring many of these opinions together and lay out an “Elements of Kubernetes” guide for app developers and operators alike. I’ll do so by relating each “element” to stories and details I’ve seen in the community that reveal what makes a good Kubernetes and cloud native app. This talk was given at KubeCon / CloudNativeCon 2017 on December 7th, 2017 in Austin, TX

We’re at another juncture in enterprise computing where there is a large push behind a big vision of the future, the push towards serverless architectures—a world where less human oversight and participation is required in operations. At this time, serverless computing is so hot right now. A promise of ‘Opsless’, cloud-native, pay-for-what-you-use functions does sound great, but the current incarnation of serverless that most people think of–Function as a Service (FaaS)–is limited to ephemeral, stateless, and short-lived functions. The actor model is an old computer science concept, originating in 1973 and it laid dormant is largely a thought experiment for most of its history until the rise of the Internet. Now in the era of cheap, commodity cloud computing the actor model is staging a major comeback across all programming languages and runtimes, both for building distributed systems and for creating reactive mobile or desktop applications. In this talk, we will introduce the actor model through the use of Akka.NET, the most popular distributed actor model framework in .NET. We'll talk about what sorts of problems it solves well when you should use it, and what are some of the adoption costs and overhead involved in using a tool like Akka.NET. By the time you're finished with this talk, you should be familiar with most of the major Akka.NET and actor model concepts, basic Akka.NET syntax, and some ideas for how you might be able to use actors in your place of work. Oh, now what? Another technobabble name - megaservice! What is a megaservice? A megaservice is a microservice that is capable of processing up to one million logical operations per second. In this context, the service prefix indicates the expected maximum sustained per second logical operation throughput. In this talk, we will look at the more common deca-service (tens of LOPS), hecto-service (hundreds of LOPS), and kilo-service (thousands of LOPS) implementation techniques. We examine some of the common performance bottlenecks and look at methods to push services to higher throughput levels. I'll share our experiences with a demo microservice application that we are using to push the cloud service providers to their limits. The demo application is composed of two Akka CQRS microservices. The app provides an interactive world map UI that visualizes IoT devices' distribution spread across the planet. With the click of the mouse, we generate thousands, tens of thousands, even millions of IoT devices and observe how various databases and cloud systems react when push to the limit. All of the application code is built using OSS such as Akka, Java, JavaScript, and Kubernetes. The demo app is available for you to use as a learning tool for building your megaservices.

ESXi hardware supports NIC hardware offloading and queueing on 10Gb, 25Gb, 40Gb and 100Gb NIC adapters. Multiple hardware queues per NIC interface (vmnic) and multiple software threads on ESXi VMkernel is depicted and documented in this paper which may or may not be the root cause of the observed problem. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for cloud environments provides compute processing, storage, networks, and other fundamental computing resources. To support multi-tenant cloud environments, IaaS utilizes the various advantages of the virtualization, but con-ventional virtual (overlay) network architectures for IaaS have been a direct cause of scalability limitations in multi-tenant cloud environments. In other words, IaaS’s virtual networks have the limitations due to the problems of high availability and load bal-ancing, etc. To solve these problems, we present EYWA, a virtual network architecture that scales to support huge data centers with high availability, load balancing and large layer-2 semantics. The design of EYWA overcomes the limitations by accommodating (1)a large number of tenants (about 224 = 16,777,216) by using virtual LANs such as logically isolated network with its own IP range in the cloud service providers’ view, and providing (2)public network service per tenant without throughput bottleneck and single point of failure (SPOF) on Source and Destination Network Address Translation (SNAT/DNAT) and (3)a single large IP subnet per tenant by using large layer-2 semantics in the consumers’ view. EYWA combines existing techniques into a decentralized scale-out control and data plane. The only component of EYWA is an agent in every hypervisor host that can control packets and the agents act as distributed controller. As a result, EYWA can be deployed into all the multi-tenant cloud environments today.
