Having never heard of FME and having no real programming experience, I was a little intimidated when I first agreed to take a look at the software and see what I could come up with to integrate St. Louis County’s GIS data with ESRI’s LGIM. The decision was made to integrate the model from the standpoint that the GIS Service Center would maintain our current production database and update the LGIM database to take advantage of web maps and apps offered by ESRI. As users, I feel we are inundated with promises of geospatial glory and the ease of which we can achieve these goals. “Easily integrate your data into this awesome model!” “Use ArcGIS for Local Government and take advantage of configurable maps and apps!” BUT, first you need the data model. And without any geodatabase integration experience, the answers aren’t always so clear.
Because the NENA i3 NG911 GIS Data Model standards have not been published, I have not integrated our data to be NG911 compliant. But, now that I understand the process of geodatabase integration, the same methodology will be used to integrate the NG911 database. And FME will be the impetus for reaching that goal.
“I am always learning that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” ~Pablo PicassoPicasso was one of the world’s most famous artists. And in my eyes, this entire process is work of art. I know it is corny, but in my experience, FME provided someone with no database integration experience, the tools (and for free, I might add…) to develop a translation model solution that was right for the GIS Service Center.
