3. What is Whiskey/Whisky?
Whiskey or Whisky is a spirit
distilled from fermented
mash and aged in wooden
casks.
Malt Whiskey: Made by
distilling Barley in pot still.
Grain Whiskey: Made by distilling
maize grains in patent still.
12. Wash still
The first distillation is
called wash still and
results in giving Low
wines .
Low wine still
The second distillation
is done to extract spirits
from the low wines.
16. Types of Scotch Whisky
Single malt is malt whisky from one distillery.
E.g. Glenfiddich, Macallan, etc.
Vatted malt is a blend of malt whiskies from different
distilleries of Scotland.
Blended Whiskies is a blend of malt and grain
whisky.
E.g. Johnnie Walker Red, J&B Rare, etc.
Single Grain is grain whisky from a single distillery.
E.g. Cameron Brig

It helps us get the concentrated and pure form of the liquid being boiled.
This is the basic type of distillation we learnt in our secondary classes.
Grist is added to hot water.
Mash is allowed to extract sugar called wort.
Wort is transferred to wash backs and added yeast.

A scotch whiskey cannot be called so until it’s matured in Scotland for at least 3 years.
Many years maturation can be done. This give whiskey its golden colour and flavours.
