Este documento describe los diferentes tipos de biotecnología, incluyendo biotecnología convencional y moderna. La biotecnología convencional utiliza microorganismos directamente para producir enzimas y productos a través de procesos de fermentación. La biotecnología moderna usa microorganismos genéticamente modificados de manera más efectiva. La biotecnología se aplica en alimentos, agricultura, ganadería, salud, medio ambiente y forense.

2. Bioteknologi merupakan penggunaan organisme atau bagian
dari organisme untuk membuat suatu produk atau jasa
sehingga dapat mensejahterakan manusia.
Bioteknologi dibagi menjadi dua yaitu bioteknologi
konvensional dan bioteknologi modern.

3. BIOTEKNOLOGI KONVENSIONAL
Bioteknologi konvensional, merupakan bioteknologi yang memanfaatkan
mikroorganisme secara langsung seperti bakteri maupun jamur, sehingga
menghasilkan enzim dan melibatkan proses fermentasi untuk menghasilkan
produk atau jasa. Contohnya tempe, tapai, roti, keju, yoghurt dll.
Bioteknologi konvensional memiliki beberapa karakteristik antara lain :
- Jumlah produk yang dihasilkan sedikit
- Hanya menerapkan teknologi sederhana
- Prosesnya relative belum steril sehingga kualitas hasilnya belum terjamin
Keuntungan adanya fermentasi :
- Menimbulkan aroma dan rasa baru
- Menambah nilai gizi pada hasilnya
- Dapat mengubah warna
Pembagian proses fermentasi yaitu yang menghasilkan alcohol dan tidak menghasilkan
alcohol, tetapi membentuk zat organic lain.

4. BIOTEKNOLOGI MODERN
Bioteknologi modern merupakan penggunaan mikroorganisme
tidak langsung, tetapi menggunakan mikroorganisme yang
direkayasa, sehingga menjadi lebih efektif dan efisien.
Bioteknologi modern memanfaatkan organisme dalam tingkat
seluler atau molekuler, misalnya dalam teknologi reproduksi dan
rekayasa genetika.

6. BIOTEKNOLOGI PANGAN
Bioteknologi yang digunakan untuk menghasilkan produk makanan
dengan memanfaatkan mikroorganisme. Beberapa contoh produk
bioteknologi pangan yaitu :
1. Tapai – mikroorganisme Saccharomyces cerevisiae, jamur Aspergillus
sp. dan bakteri Acetobacter aceti
2. Yoghurt – susu dengan bantuan bakteri asam laktat (Lactobacillus
bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus casei dan
Bifidobacteria)
3. Keju – Lactococcus sp., Lactobasillus bulgaricus dan Streptococcus
thermophilus
4. Kecap – jamur Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus sojae dan Aspergillus
wentii
5. Roti – bakteri Saccharomyces cerevisiae
6. Minuman beralkohol - Saccharomyces

7. BIOTEKNOLOGI PERTANIAN dan
PETERNAKAN
Bioteknologi pertanian dengan melakukan bioteknologi modern dengan
menerapkan Teknik rekayasa genetika, yaitu dengan melakukan manipulasi
susunan gen suatu organisme sehingga dapat dihasilkan suatu organisme
dengan sifat baru.
Bioteknologi peternakan dengan dikembangkannya hewan transgenic melalui
Teknik rekayasa genetic. Contohnya peningkatan produksi susu dilakukan
dengan cara memproduksi hormone bovine somatotropin (bST) yang
kemudian disuntikkan pada sapi perah atau dengan cara membuat sapi
perah transgenic yang mampu memproduksi hormone bST lebih banyak.

8. - Pembuatan antibiotic – jamur Penicillum notatum dan Penicillum
chrysogenum
- Insulin sintetis – bakteri E. coli
- Vaksin – Langkah melindungi tubuh dari pathogen yang menyebabkan
penyakit misalnya hepatitis, polio, tetanus, campak dan lain sebagainya
- Antibodi monoclonal – antibodi yang spesifik untuk satu jenis antigen, yang
dihasilkan dari satu jenis sel limfosit B yang merupakan hasil cloning dari sel
induk.

9. BIOTEKNOLOGI LINGKUNGAN dan
BIOTEKNOLOGI FORENSIK
Bioteknologi lingkungan dengan memanfaatkan bakteri dari genus Pseudomonas
yang mempu membersihkan tumpahan minyak. Hal ini disebut bioremediasi.
Bioteknologi forensik dengan menggunakan Teknik DNA Fingerprinting atau sidik
jari, yaitu Teknik untuk mengidentifikasi seseorang berdasarkan pita DNA.
