2. An argumentative essay is a type of essay that presents arguments about both sides of an issue. It could be that
both sides are presented equally balanced, or it could be that one side is presented more forcefully than the other.
It’s also called an opinion essay.
LAYOUT: A 5 paragraph essay:
INTRODUCTION: What is the main issue? Why do we care?
background, fact, quotation, rhetorical question.
ARGUMENT: Brief explanation of your main opinion.
MAIN POINTS: Thesis statement : 3 body paragraphs: 2 arguments for, 1 against (your counter
point/argument)
Your paragraphs should be 4 or 5 sentences long:
1- Your point, a statement summarizing the main ideas.
2- Additional ideas you give to support the topic sentence.
3/4- Evidence to support your topic sentence. Giving examples which can be facts,
personal experiences or a physical description of something. 2 examples can be
provided.
5- Link back to your topic sentence. Transitional words or phrases can be used.
Use Linkers or conjunctions to connect sentences and ideas, the main point with the
thesis and the conclusion.
CONCLUSION: Partly admit, restate your opinión, recommend future action
