3. Cajamarca (en quechua cajamar-
quino: Kashamarka, 'pueblo o valle
urbano.
Cajamarca (Spanish pronuncia-
tion: [kaxaˈmaɾka]) is the capital and
largest city of the Cajamarca Re-
gion as well as an important cultural
and commercial center in the northern
Andes. It is located in the northern
highlands of Peru at approximately
2,750 m (8,900 ft) above sea level[2]
in
the valley of the Mashcon river.[3]
Cajamarca has an estimated popula-
tion for 2014 of about 218,775 inhabi-
tants.[4]
Cajamarca has a mild highland clima-
te, and the area has a very fertile soil.
The city is well known for its dairy pro-
ducts and mining activity in the su-
rroundings.
cultura Chachapoyas, la ciudad fue
sometida al Imperio Incaico en el s.
XV y posteriormente, tras la con-
quista, fue nuevamente fundada por
los españoles con el nombre de
San Juan de la Frontera de los
Chachapoyas por Alonso de Alvara-
do en 1538, desde esa época datan
su plaza de Armas y las pequeñas
callejuelas empedradas que se con-
servan hasta la actualidad. Fue
pensada para constituirse como la
capital del oriente peruano desde la
margen derecha del río Mara-
ñón hasta los límites con las nacio-
nes fronterizas. En 1821 derrotaron
en ella los patriotas peruanos a los
realistas, convirtiéndose de inme-
diato (1832) en la capital de uno de
los primeros departamentos. Es
sede episcopal. Destaca su memo-
rable biblioteca. La ciudad mantiene
aún, en sus construcciones, el ca-
rácter colonial de las mismas.
Named San Juan de la Frontera
de los Chachapoyas, the city was
first established near La Jalca, and
then near Levanto. The city's origi-
nal locations were abandoned due
to climate, disease and a lack of
defenses against rebelling local
groups. The location of the city
changed several times, until it was
settled in the place that it now occu-
pies at 2334 m. At first the date of
settlement had not been specified.
It is believed that the Spanish colo-
nials moved the city to its present
location in 1545.
At one time there was
a lagoon surrounded with totoras (a
type of bulrush) and palm trees.
From these plants, wood was ex-
tracted to build the temples of the
city. The Kuélap stadium now
stands this location.
