What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why
1. Alice and Harry Media Evaluation
What kind of Media Institution might distribute your media product and why?
The media institution, which we think will distribute our magazine, is IPC media. IPC media is
a UK leading magazine publisher who varies in the type of magazine they sell. Selling their
magazine is important for them so they can distribute and promote the companies involved
with them. IPC media produce over 60 iconic media brands and the website alone collect
over 20 million users every month. This would be beneficial to us, as it would be guaranteed
that people would see the magazine, which would create a recognised name. When we
looked at IPC media, we noticed they publish a diverse range of magazines ranging from
cooking magazines to motoring magazines, all of which help to expand their popularity and
audience. They also publish the magazine ‘NME’, the music magazine that is similarly
presented in the same way as we designed our magazine; it falls under the same genre. IPC
don’t advertise and publish many other magazines, which could potentially suggest there is
a gap in the market for our product.
IPC gave NME a platform to become a popular and worldwide music magazine. They have a
website and once a year present their own awards evening. Knowing this reassures us that if
we were to distribute our magazine to them there would be high publicity to IPC. Our
magazine at the same time will gain a sense of reliability, as IPC are a successful brand,
which are a reliable business and are trusted by the national public.
IPC as well as having an awards evening, publish their magazines internationally. In 1963 it
converged with three of the UK’s leading magazine publishers. Selling our magazine spreads
to this company would mean that we would gain a wider demographic, gaining popularity,
reliability and a wider audience.
IPC are likely to distribute our magazine, as its modern and graphic design is a unique yet
highly approachable design to a pop music magazine. IPC don’t publish many music
magazine and we thin that selling ours would allow both us, and IPC to gain a wider
audience. We aimed our magazine at a younger age group to a mixed gender. This suggests
widely that they will be able to appeal to a larger demographic and therefore expand,
ultimately creating a reliable and legit magazine name.
