A 3720 msnm, uno tarda en aclimatarse. El viento sopla con fuerza
y trae consigo una especie de frescura extraña y penetrante: es
el Cotopaxi. Es así como llegamos a Tambopaxi. Esta hostería –
restaurante es sin duda un lugar estratégico para disfrutar de las
múltiples actividades que se puede realizar en el ecosistema de
páramo o directamente sobre los glaciares. No es coincidencia
que ascensionistas y bikers de todo el mundo visiten este lugar
para emprender actividades deportivas.A partir de octubre es un
muy buen tiempo para visitar Tambopaxi, pues no hay lluvias y los
cielos despejados permiten admirar el maravilloso paisaje de 360º
compuesto por los volcanes Sincholagua (4893 m), Rumiñahui (4712
m), ya un poco más lejos el Pasochoa, los Ilinizas, los Pichinchas, el
Antisana, y por supuesto el colosal Cotopaxi.
Una de las actividades principales que ofrece Tambopaxi son
las cabalgatas de páramo. Pueden ajustarse al gusto y nivel de
resistencia de los visitantes, e ir desde tres horas hasta varios
días. En la primera hora de nuestra cabalgata, atravesamos un
valle de escoria volcánica. Luego, avanzamos por el páramo de
pajonal hasta las ruinas de una fortaleza inca; desde este punto
(El Salitre), la vista del valle de escoria y de las elevaciones
circundantes impresiona. Avanzamos entonces una media hora más
hasta un sitio hermoso conocido como el Manantial. Se trata de un
conjunto de pequeñas elevaciones en cuyo centro se ha formado
