Transition to the Common Core State Standards in mathematics has
begun in VUSD! Tonight is an opportunity to meet with the VUSD
District Staff and a leading mathematics educator, Jo Boaler, from
Stanford University.
Common Core Mathematics Standards focus on fewer standards, providing more time to build deep
understanding. The intent is for students to be able to understand, connect and communicate their
mathematical learning through goals stated in the Eight Standards of Mathematical Practice for grades K
through 12.
Dr. Jo Boaler is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and author of seven books,
including What's Math Got To Do With It? and Connecting Mathematical Ideas - a collection of middle school
cases of teaching, with Cathy Humphreys. Her former roles include being the Marie Curie Professor of
Mathematics Education in England and a middle and high school teacher of mathematics.
