2. Creating and sustaining continuously improving innovation
performance
Innovation performance-improvement initiatives fail for two main reasons. Firstly, conception: they try to improve
through a structure-focused approach. Secondly, execution: they fail to engage with the complexities of aligning
behaviours around the new vision.
Three patterns have emerged: some initiatives are total failures; some start well and then lose momentum; a few
launch processes of self- sustaining improvement.What accounts for these differences?
Disturbingly, some initiatives are doomed to fail partially or even completely from the start.This is either because
management has not understood the nature and magnitude of the challenges facing the organisation, or
alternatively, intentions are good but execution is poor.
During the programme, actual experiences from the participants and case studies of well-known companies
grappling with transformation will be used to draw lessons on the conditions for success.
Emphasises the importance of cultivating routines to
become aware of individual- and groupthink and how
to test for collective learning.Thus growing trust to
deliver value.The program is intended to help you
improve your ability to manage creativity, innovation
and change in business, and in any other complex
organization or institution by diagnosing potential
innovation failures before they can occur. Using a
“learning culture” framework that draws on modern
social science research and on insights from business
practice, participants will learn how to best manage
people (be they co-workers, bosses, customers,
clients, friends or any other stakeholders) when
innovation is the goal.While we see several examples
of technological innovation, we are not focused on
the management of technology. Instead, we focus on
something much more powerful: understanding and
managing the people engaged in creation,
innovation and positive change, regardless of the
context.
The program is designed to help you answer the
following types of questions:
• What are the conditions for sustaining a
successful innovation culture and innovation?
• What causes innovation to fail and great ideas get
killed?
• What makes creative teams creative?
• How should I manage an innovative team?
• How do I lead an effective innovation design
process?
• What is an innovation portfolio and how can I
manage one?

4. Course Learning Methods and Pedagogy
The pedagogical approach we will use is consistent with HPL (How People Learn) theory. Each of the major content
areas in the program will be reinforced through each of the following four mechanisms.

The approach in this program will be to treat
innovation as the process of discovering, cultivating,
validating, and then scaling useful and valuable
ideas, whether that be a more efficient way-of-
working or a market disruption.
Generating ideas is relatively easy; what can be hard
is getting those ideas listened to, accepted, and
implemented in organizations. In addition to learning
how to lead ideation and creative teams, participants
will also learn techniques for improving their own
creativity. During the program you will engage
numerous activities and exercises intended to bring
current habits of thought and behavior to the surface
for examination and transformation.
Experience: We will start each module with an
experience to provide an intuitive grounding for the
material and to generate first-hand experiences of the
topics under discussion.This will be done through
individual exercises, through online discussions of
experiences, and through the key process of founding
an internal ValueFactory including completing an
innovation project.
Understand: Each on-line or formal instruction is
focused on helping you develop a formal
understanding of the material. Readings and
assessments will also be used to help you to
understand, challenge, and extend your
understanding of innovation culture research and
practice. Building a formal language will allow us to
be clear in our communications and to generate new
insights about the process of building an innovation
culture.
Apply: Each period you will be given assignments or
exercises meant to test your application of the course
material. Participants will have the benefit of the team
innovation project as a context for experimentation
and gaining mastery of the ideas. Projects will test the
practical value of the frameworks and develop the
skills needed to apply it.
Reflect: Based on the lectures, online forum
discussions, coaching, self- and peer-assessments,
and the project of founding your company’s 10X-
ValueFactory you will be expected to reflect on your
new insights and changing views of innovation.The
goal is to help you develop your own personal
perspective on innovation and an approach that
works for you.
It is these new perspectives that will be
the ultimate take-away of value from the
course.

Participants achieving a score of 75% or higher on
the deliverables outlined below will receive a signed
PDF entitled “Statement of Accomplishment – With
Distinction - Culture & Innovation Ambassador” that
certifies mastery of the program conceptual and
content and in applying it to building an innovation
culture foundation and an innovation project.
In this program you will learn:

✔ Create mechanisms to sustain innovation

The program has been designed to be followed in
company teams (4 participants). It is estimated that the
time commitment in the first 90 days is 8-12 hrs/week,
roughly 60% on-the-job.
After the 90 days period, the related activities are
considered being part-of-the-job.

Following the founding of your 10X-ValueFactory, you are supported during the next three 3-months periods to
scale the innovation and culture activities. Monthly coaching and peer-to-peer reflection are key tools to help you
and your team to deliver the envisioned key results. Each 3-months period a strategic reflection meeting is
planned for all participants in order to cultivate peer-to-peer knowledge exchange, trust and reflection.
7. Summary
• This unique 1-year program is specifically designed for company teams that want to build – or are in the
process of building – innovation capabilities.Where other programs focus on marketing and finance, we help
leaders focus on building a solid business foundation that can sustain long-term growth.
• It’s all about leadership development, team building, strategy implementation, and process
improvement. Based on thorough assessment of the team and company culture you receive actionable
guidance and coaching in building and filling your innovation pipeline.
• Company teams of four will work closely through guided challenges, gaining background and experience as
innovation change agents. Since company lead involvement is critical to success, you are coached in building
this open relationship.
• In monthly meetings you meet the other participating teams to exchange experiences and learn together.You
will have access to a digital communication platform for coordinating teamwork as well as exchanging news,
ideas, questions and know-how with fellow participants.
• Company lead is involved during the program to build the company specific framework.As a result after the
first 90 days, you will have founded your company ValueFactory: more than a physical space, a place ready to
cultivate innovation and deliver new value to the company.

In 2016 this program will start in January, March and September. Each time the program is open to 8 company
teams of 4 members maximum to ensure a high quality standard of support and coaching.
