3. What were thy lips the worse for one poor kiss?
Speak, fair; but speak fair words, or else be mute:
Give me one kiss, I'll give it thee again,
And one for interest, if thou wilt have twain.
6. The petulant Eros took two arrows, one of gold and one of lead. The gold one was
supposed to incite love, while the lead one was supposed to incite hatred. With the
leaden shaft, Eros shot the nymph Daphne and with the golden one, he shot Apollo
through the heart. Apollo was seized with love for the maiden, Daphne, and she in
turn abhorred him.
9. I felt awoken in my heart
a loving spirit that was sleeping;
and then I saw Love coming from far away so
glad, I could just recognize.
saying "you think you can honor me",
and with each word laughing.
12. Ah!
Things dead, long dead, see! how they rise
again!
Why, why keep silence all these fourteen
years,
When, on this letter, which he never wrote,
The tears were your tears?
13. ¡Ay!...
¡cuántas cosas ya muertas
vuelven a renacer...
¿Por qué habéis callado
durante catorce años si las
lágrimas de esta carta no
eran de él sino vuestras?...
15. Heartbroken by Narcissus, Echo spent the rest of her life in lonely glens pining away for
the love she never knew, crying until all that was left was her voice.

17. Doubt thou the stars are fire,
Doubt that the sun doth move,
Doubt truth to be a liar,
But never doubt I love.
Duda que sean de fuego las estrellas,
duda que el Sol haga movimientos,
duda que la verdad sea una mentira,
pero nunca dudes que te amo.
20. Alas! It’s brief and pleasure is untrue: for you always leave me, as sleep does.
Oh, let’s bind our eager passions more firmly, so that our joys lack nothing of faith and
truth. Why do I spend so many cold, empty nights?
Why are you so often, lingering slowly, absent from me?
22. Now when Judith came in and sat down, Holofernes his heart was ravished with her, and
his mind was moved, and he desired greatly her company; for he waited a time to
deceive her, from the day that he had seen her.

25. What shall I do without Eurydice?
Where shall I go without my love?
Eurydice! Eurydice!
O heavens! Answer!
I am still true to you!
Eurydice! Eurydice!
Ah, there is no help,
no hope for me
either on earth nor in heaven!
¿Qué haré sin Eurídice?
¿Dónde iré sin mi amor?
¿Qué haré? ¿Dónde iré?
¡Eurídice! ¡Eurídice!
¡Ah! ¡No recibo
socorro ni esperanza
de la tierra ni del cielo!
28. One more, one more.
Be thus when thou art dead,
and I will kill thee,
And love thee after. One more,
and this the last:
So sweet was ne'er so fatal.
¡Uno más! ¡Otro aún!
¡Quédate así, cuando estés
muerta y te mataré,
y acto seguido volveré a
amarte! ¡Otro más!
¡El último!...¡Nunca beso tan
dulce fue tan fatal!.

and the season, and the time, and the hour, and the
moment,
and the beautiful country, and the place where I was

The promises of old times,
Those promises that I loved!
Ah! respond to my tenderness!
Fill me with ecstasy!
¡Recuerda a mi ternura
las promesas de otro tiempo,
los juramentos que tanto amo!
¡Ah! ¡Responde a mi ternura!
¡Vierte sobre mí tu amor!
41. If our two loves be one,
or thou and I Love so alike that
none can slacken,
none can die.
Si nuestros corazones son uno,
o nuestro amor semejante,
ninguno desfallecerá,
ninguno morirá.
