Potsdam is a city located in northern Germany near Berlin. It was originally the residence of the powerful Hohenzollern family who ruled the region for hundreds of years. They built stunning castles and parks in Potsdam, making it a beautiful place to live. Some of the most famous sights built by the Hohenzollern include Sanssouci Palace, the New Palace, and Cecilienhof Castle where the Potsdam Conference was held after World War 2. Today Potsdam remains an important historic city known for its royal past and cultural landmarks.

• it is the capital and largest city of the federal
state „Brandenburg“
• it directly borders the German Capital „Berlin“
• it is situated on the river „Havel“

• Potsdam was first named in 993 (more than
1000 years ago)
• since 1415 the powerful family „Hohenzollern“
reign a region called „Brandenburg-Preußen“
• actually their residence was Berlin, but Potsdam
was a much more beautiful place for them
• so Potsdam turned to their residental place
• that´s why they built majestetic castles and
parks for their stays in Potsdam

• he won a lot of wars

• most magnificent rooms are the „marble hall“, the

Sanssouci – without worrys
35. Cecilienhof
• built by the last german emperor „Wilhelm II“ 1913-1917
• it was built for his son and his wife Cecilie and has 176
rooms and 55 chimneys
• it became famous worldwide in summer of 1945, when
the Potsdam conference took place here after the World
War II
• heads of the state of victorious powers (Stalin from
Russia, Truman from the U.S., Churchill and later Attlee
from Great Britain) met here to discuss the division of
Germany and Europe
52. Dutch Quarter
• Soldier King Frederick Wilhem I (father of „Old Fritz“)
hoped that this original idea would attract well-
trained tradesmen from Holland to Potsdam
• 1732 he ordered a neighborhood in dutch style with
134 brick houses with a back garden
• but „Little Amsterdam“ didn´t fill its intended
purpose: only a few artisans from Holland came here;
later soldiers and artists from France and Germany
lived in the houses
• today this attractive neighborhood is home to many
restaurants and upscale shops
