a. Spanish and Portuguese colonized the
Americas creating what we know as
Latin America.
b. Latin America was a multiracial
society.
i. Mestizos- Europeans and Native
Americans.
ii. Mulattoes- Europeans and Africans.
3. c. Spain and Portuguese sought
ways to profit from their colonies.
i. Gold and Silver
ii. Farming
iii. Trade from the parent country.
d. Colonial Rule in Brazil will last
over 300 Years.
4. e. European rulers were determined
to spread Christianity.
i. They brought Native Americans
into missions to be converted.
ii. Missionaries tried to control the
lives of the Native Americans.
iii. Catholic Church built schools in the
colonies to teach Native American
students the three R’s.
5. f. Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz urged
women to be educated.
i. She was a well known nun/literary
figure.
ii. Denied entry into University of Mexico
because she was a woman.
6. II. Britain and British North America
a. The U.K. of Great Britain was formed
in 1707 when the governments of
England and Scotland united.
b. The monarch and Parliament shared
power.
i. Parliament had upper hand because
they could make laws, levy taxes, and
pass the budget.
7. c. Hanoverians took power in 1714

ii. The prime minister allowed handling
Parliament.
d. G.B. expanded into N. America.
i. Britain controlled Canada and 13
colonies.
ii. Many major eastern cities didn’t want
Britain to run their affairs.

9. III.The American Revolution
a. Following the 7 Years war, Britain
needed more revenues from the
colonies.
i. 1765 Parliaments imposed the Stamp
Act.
ii. Act was repealed in 1766.
10. b. The American colonies and Great
Britain had numerous crises in the
1770’s.
i. The first Continental Congress
convened in 1774.
ii. Shots fired at Lexington and Concord
beginning the war for independence in
1775.
iii. 1776 Signing of Jefferson’s Declaration
of Independence.
11. c. Colonists needed help from foreign
countries.
i. France supplied arms and men, and
formally recognized the American state
in 1777.
ii. Spanish and Dutch also joined against
Great Britain.
12. d. Colonists were able to defeat the
British army at Yorktown in 1781.
e. Treaty of Paris (1783)
i. Officially recognized the Independence
of the American Colonies.
ii. American now controlled land from
Appalachians to the Mississippi River.

14. IV.The Birth of a New Nation
a. The U.S. had little interest in forming
a country with a strong central
government.
b. New Government Articles of
Confederation
i. Lacked the power to deal with the
nation’s problems.
15. c. In 1787 delegates met to revise the
Articles.
i. Became known as the Constitutional
Convention.
d. Proposed a federal system.
i. Power is shared between the national
and state governments.
ii. National Government had the power to
levy taxes, raise an army, regulate
trade, and create a national currency.
16. e. Federal government divided into
three branches in a system of checks
and balances.
i. Executive (President)
ii. Legislative (Congress)
iii. Judicial (Courts)
f. Bill of Rights helped get the
Constitution adopted.
i. Many of these rights were derived from
the natural rights proposed by the
eighteenth-century philosophers.
