1. In 1932, in a small field in Northern Ireland, a man
watched an airplane land. He walked over to the
airplane, and the pilot jumped out. The pilot was a
young woman! With a big smile, the woman asked,
“Where am I?” “In Gallegher’s pasture,” he said.
“Have you come far?” “From America,” she said.
2. The pilot was Amelia Earhart. Amelia was a
member of a famous group of women pilots
called the “Ninety-Nines.” The Ninety-Nines
began with 99 members in 1930. By 1935,
there were over 600 women in the group.
3. Amelia Earhart was the first woman pilot to
fly over the Atlantic by herself. She became a
national heroine. Next, she wanted a bigger
challenge. She wanted to fly around the world.
4. On June 1, 1937, she started her journey around
the world from Miami, Florida. She stopped in
Puerto Rico, Karachi, Calcutta, Bangkok, Singapore,
and Bandoeng. The whole world watched as
Amelia flew around the globe. By June 29, she
reached New Guinea. She had traveled 22,000
miles. There were only 7,000 miles to go. Amelia
left New Guinea on July 2, but she was never seen
again. Her last radio contact was near Howland
Island in the South Pacific.

1. Over one million children under the age of 16 died
in Nazi concentration camps during World War II.
Anne Frank was one of them.
2. Anne Frank was a German-Jewish teenager born
on June 12, 1929. Her family moved to Amsterdam
in 1933 after Nazi leader Adolf Hitler became the
chancellor of Germany. On June 12, 1942, Anne
received a small red-and-white diary for her 13th
birthday. She called her new diary “Kitty” and
wrote in it every day. Anne’s diary became her best
friend during World War II. On July 6, 1942, Anne’s
family and four friends went into hiding from the
Nazis. They hid in small rooms above her father’s
office in Amsterdam. They hid for 25 months.
Everything about their lives became a secret.
3. But they were betrayed. They were arrested and
taken to Nazi concentration camps. In March of
1945, nine months after she was arrested, Anne
Frank died of typhus. She was 15 years old. Only
Anne’s father, Otto Frank, survived the Holocaust.
4. After the war, Otto Frank found his daughter’s
diary. In 1947, he published the diary. He
wanted people to know about the Nazis
and the Holocaust. Since then, the diary has
been published in 55 languages. More than
24 million copies have been sold. In English,
the book is called The Diary of Anne Frank.

1. “I was born on the fourth of May and died three
weeks later,” said Hollywood actress Audrey
Hepburn. Three weeks after she was born, her
heart stopped. Her mother saved her life with
a little slap.
2. Audrey Hepburn was born in Brussels, Belgium,
in 1929. Her father was an English banker and her
mother was a Dutch baroness. Ms. Hepburn began
her career as a graceful dancer and model. She
also appeared in small parts in European films.
Hollywood soon became interested in the pretty
actress. In Hollywood, she appeared in over 30
films, including Roman Holiday (1951), Funny Face
(1957), and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). She became
famous for her thin figure, beautiful eyes, and
quick intelligence.
3. In 1988, Ms. Hepburn started working for
the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
This work made her famous all over the
world. On January 20, 1993, at the age of 63,
Ms. Hepburn died of cancer in Switzerland.
4. Audrey Hepburn said, “Remember, if you ever need
a helping hand, it’s at the end of your arm. As you
get older, you must remember that you have a
second hand. The first one is to help yourself.
The second one is to help others.”

1. In 1940, Lee Hoi Chuen, a famous Chinese opera
singer, was touring America. On November 27,
his son, Lee Jun Fan, was born in the Chinatown
district in San Francisco. In 1941, the family
returned to Hong Kong.
2. In Hong Kong, Lee Jun Fan became a child
movie star. He appeared in about 20 films
in Southeast Asia. Lee also enjoyed studying
martial arts. But he started getting into trouble.
He often got into street fights, and his parents
worried, so they sent their son back to America.
3. In America, Lee Jun Fan finished high school and
entered the University of Washington. He also
opened his own very successful martial arts
school. Lee changed his name to “Bruce Lee”
and began working on the TV series The Green
Hornet. The program was very popular in America
and a bigger hit in Hong Kong. Bruce Lee moved
back to Hong Kong and starred in three movies:
The Chinese Connection, The Return of the Dragon,
and Game of Death.
4. On July 20, 1973, Bruce Lee suddenly died because
of medicine he was taking for a headache. He was
only 32 years old. He had one funeral in Hong Kong
and another one in America. He is buried at Lake
View Cemetery in Seattle, Washington.

1. Joan of Arc is a French national heroine.
Her parents were poor farmers, and she had
four brothers and sisters. At home, Joan helped
her parents and learned the Bible. When she
was 12 years old, she began to hear voices.
The voices said that she must help France
by fighting the English soldiers.
2. In the early 1400s, France had no king. The only
leader was a man called the “dauphin.” He was
a very weak leader. King Henry V of England
wanted to control France. He sent armies into
France, and he got control over Paris and part
of northern France.
3. When Joan was about 17 years old, she dressed
in boys’ clothes and went to visit the dauphin.
She told the dauphin that God spoke to her. She
told the dauphin that she could fight the English
and win. The dauphin believed her and gave
her an army. She went to Orléans and fought
the English. She won. Soon after, the dauphin
became King Charles VII of France.
4. In 1430, Joan of Arc was caught by the English
near Paris and taken prisoner. She was accused
of being a witch, saying things against God, and
wearing men’s clothes. She asked the Pope and
King Charles VII for help. But no one helped her.
She was burned at the stake in the marketplace
on May 30, 1431. She was about 19 years old.

1. Norma Jean Baker was born in 1926 in Los Angeles,
California. She had no mother and no father. Her
home was in orphanages. When she was young,
she dreamed of being a famous actress.
2. Later, Norma Jean Baker moved to Hollywood.
She changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.
She worked hard and became a very
successful actress. She starred in six
movies, including Some Like It Hot, The Seven
Year Itch, and Misfits. At first, people thought
she was a bad actress, so she worked harder
and became a better actress.
3. Marilyn Monroe got married three times. She
was 16 years old the first time she got married.
Her second marriage was to Joe DiMaggio, a
famous American baseball player. Her third
marriage was to Arthur Miller, a writer.
4. Marilyn Monroe was intelligent and beautiful.
She was also very successful in Hollywood.
But she was not happy. When she was 36 years
old, she killed herself. When she was alive, she
was a sex symbol. After she died, she became
a Hollywood legend.

1. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks said “No!” to
a white man in Montgomery, Alabama. The white
man was a bus driver. He asked Rosa Parks to
move to the back of the bus because another
white man wanted to sit down. Rosa Parks was
a black woman. She had worked all day and she
was tired. When the bus driver told her to move,
she decided to say no.
2. The police came and took Rosa Parks to jail.
Black people in Montgomery, Alabama, became
angry about this, and they started a bus
boycott. The bus company lost a lot of money
because black people in Montgomery wouldn’t
ride the buses. The bus boycott lasted 381 days.
It was in newspapers all over America. Rosa
Parks became a national hero.
3. Rosa Parks had been working for a long time
to help black people before the police put her in
jail. She was a secretary for a black organization
in America called the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP). She worked with black children in poor
neighborhoods too. She had been shouted at
by white bus drivers before. But on December 1,
when Rosa Parks said “No!” to the white bus driver,
the civil rights movement in America began.
4. Rosa Parks lived in Detroit until she
died at the age of 92 on October 24, 2005.
