Hello, my name is Melissa VerSchageI am in my second semester in the Educational Technology Master’s program, with a focus on Instructional DesignThis brief presentation is to introduce myself to you and tell you my view of instructional design and it’s role in learning
My background is rather diverse when you look at the industries in which I’ve worked:I worked in Heating & Air Conditioning for 12 years,Real Estate Investment for 7 years, andHigher Education for the past 5 yearsWhat’s interesting is the resulting continuity in my accumulated skills across these diverse industries
Graphic design & marketing, corporate training, and technical support are skills that I developed early in my career and used across all of my jobs in the last 20 plus yearsMy experience in these areas served as a base set of skills, leading me to my future career as an instructional designer
My graphics and marketing background were a great foundation for my brand management work, which is where everything changed for meIn my brand manager role, I was responsible for designing, developing and delivering brand education, including corporate standards and toolsIn this role, I branched out into technical writing and instructional design…forever changing my stars
There are a couple of things about me that you should know:Type A personality – I don’t dominate, but I step up when others don’tLists are VERY important to me – they keep me on taskMy calendar is my lifeObsessed with detailsOverachieverI prefer order, though I don’t always get it
Instructional Design is the process of translating principals of learning and instructions into plans for instructional materials, activities, and evaluation. Further, in order for Instructional Design to be sustainable, it must be evolving, learning from the previous participants to improve the process.
Instructional Design is the process of translating principals of learning and instructions into plans for instructional materials, activities, and evaluation. Further, in order for Instructional Design to be sustainable, it must be evolving, learning from the previous participants to improve the process.I still believe that Instructional Design is the process of translating principals of learning and instructions into plans. At a higher level, instructional design creates an experience for learners. It gives knowledge and skills. It caters to them. It gives them what they need to grow.
To keep it super simple, just ask 6 key questions:WhoWhatWhenWhyWhere, andHow
Who is your audience? We must consider who we are presenting the information to and address their learning style and needs. What am I teaching? Be specific about it by creating clear, measurable objectives to guide you in planning the program. When is your deadline? Do we have enough time to properly design this product?
Where is this being delivered? What environment is this program being delivered in? Classroom? In the field? Corporate environment? Mobile - traveling product? Why am I doing this? Ask direct questions about the purpose of this training. Get to the bottom line - why is this important? How is this being delivered? Will it be a face-to-face, hybrid or online delivery? If online, is it live interactive or self-paced, or a combination?
Instructional design plays a crucial role in learningIf we don’t know the answers to the questions who, what, when, where, why and how, we risk achieving nothingWe risk teaching participants nothing and learning nothing from experience ourselvesRemember, Instructional Design is an organic process…without feedback, it will become obsolete
What I hear, I forget.What I see, I remember.What I do, I understand.Confucius
Honestly, I think that instructional design could be used to resolve almost any real world problemIt’s a great model to follow from a project management perspective…research, analyze, design, develop, deliver, assess (measure against the plan), evaluate, adjust, redeploy
For example, ASU is doing a major upgrade to a PeopleSoft this yearWe have thousands of people to educate and/or train regarding the changesWe must clearly understand our objectives, and our incredibly diverse audience who will require unique trainingsMore than ever, Instructional Design will be a key component in success of this project
Thank you for listening to my schpealI look forward to getting to know all of you this semester and working with you on our upcoming projectsHappy designing!!
