1. When describing in the past one action that was
interrupted by another action we will use the
preterit for the interrupting action and the
imperfect/imperfect progressive for the on-going
action.
I was reading when the doorbell rang.
In this sentence the on-going action = I was reading (imperfect)
That action was interrupted by = the doorbell rang (preterit)
Yo estaba leyendo cuando la campana sonó.
Yo leía cuando la campana sonó.

novio ____ (llegar) para visitar.
2. Nosotros ______ (limpiar) la casa cuando el
teléfono ___ (empezar) a sonar.
