Hero or a Villain, or just lucky?
William was promised the throne by Edward in 1051, and in 1065 Harold swore an oath to support his claim, therefore he had every right to go and claim the throne in England in 1066 William produced inspired leadership during the Battle – taking off his helmet to show he was alive William pioneered the tactic of retreating and then striking at the Saxons – it helped to win William was lucky the wind held him back – as it meant Harold had to go and fight Hardrada. Maybe if he’d travelled when he wanted to he would have suffered the same fate as his Norwegian counterpart William was cruel when he initially came to Britain – destroying villages on the way to London to be crowner King William set up the Domesday book to keep a record of who lived in the country. This was an impressive task – and showed his organisation skills William set up the Domesday book in order to get money – tax from the people. This was a selfish act to give him money to live a good lifestyle William massacred towns all over the country. Thousands of Peasants died William was kind to Harold when he was growing up in France The Pope supported William’s right to become King of England

Paragraph 1 Write about the quote. State whether you agree/ disagree or are sitting on the fence Paragraph 2 Write about how William was a nasty, horrible piece of work. Provide concrete examples of how bad he was – (i.e. Starving villagers) Paragraph 3 Write about how William was the opposite – he was a great leader, and changed the course of our country Paragraph 4 Write about how William was lucky – (high winds, Harold’s men being tired etc) Paragraph 5 Write a conclusion – remember not to disagree with your initial answer – recap about what you have written in the previous paragraphs

William was promised the throne by Edward in 1051, and in 1065 Harold swore an oath to support his claim, therefore he had every right to go and claim the throne in England in 1066 William produced inspired leadership during the Battle – taking off his helmet to show he was alive William pioneered the tactic of retreating and then striking at the Saxons – it helped to win William was lucky the wind held him back – as it meant Harold had to go and fight Hardrada. Maybe if he’d travelled when he wanted to he would have suffered the same fate as his Norwegian counterpart William was cruel when he initially came to Britain – destroying villages on the way to London to be crowner King William set up the Domesday book to keep a record of who lived in the country. This was an impressive task – and showed his organisation skills William set up the Domesday book in order to get money – tax from the people. This was a selfish act to give him money to live a good lifestyle William massacred towns all over the country.
