Global OTT Market Overview

Streaming video over broadband networks – known as Over-the-Top (OTT) video – is replacing traditional
means of renting and purchasing movies and other licensed video content
Fixed network data services with higher plan quotas and bandwidth has been friendlier to OTT video so
        far
Video content service providers such as Hulu and Netflix are making it economically attractive to access a
large selection of on demand “programming”
Users are shiſting their viewing habits from time-slot programming to watching video programs anytime
OTT video usage is becoming more viable on higher speed 4G mobile broadband networks
Mobile devices are now capable of supporting HD video content with longer battery life over higher-speed
        mobile broadband networks

Ubiquity of mobile devices with video capabilities
▬  Availability of dual and quad core smartphones with dedicated graphics processors
▬  Larger form factor smartphones and smaller tablets encourage video usage

OTT services can threaten a mobile operator’s service revenues and margins
▬  OTT video is putting a strain on mobile operator networks
▬  Can impact profitability if leſt to go unchecked

OTT Video Solution Needs
Mobile operators embracing OTT video need to answer the following questions
▬  How should they respond to the growth of OTT video?
▬  What is the right approach to monetizing without discouraging usage?
▬  How can they improve the user’s streaming video experience?
▬  How can they increase ARPU without causing churn?

Three key success factors for mobile operators executing an OTT video services plan
▬  Awareness – understand video usage in the network
▬  Optimization – improve video streaming QoS as part of new service plans
▬  Monetization – move from video unaware, single quota data plans to value-based video plans
