Because of the broad spectrum of collaboration available in our platform, you’re not limited or restricted to using Blackboard Collaborate in any way. You’re free to use the many features of Blackboard Collaborate in the ways that best suit your needs. When we spoke to clients they told us students, faculty and administrators are looking for more ways to communicate and interact with one another and need pathways between formal and informal instruction.
Blackboard Collaborate™ is a live collaboration platform designed for education that goesbeyond web conferencing and traditional instant messaging to facilitate highly effective, engagingonline instruction, help and administrative meetings.
Think about office hours, an instructor needs the rich collaboration tools of a whiteboard and desktop sharing to illustrate and convey more complex concepts that go beyond voice, video and text. Many educational interactions require the formal virtual classroom where the instructor can record, control the chat, send students to breakout rooms, and other concepts necessary for a one to many interaction. The Final type of sessions are the largest and include an auditorium-style lectures, conferences, seminars and can be used for marketing and promotional purposes. Again, you’re not limited to any type of usage and are free to use the technology as it suits your needs.
There’s the Interaction panels on the left side of the screen which include the Audio/Video panel, the participants panel where you can see all the people in the session and the Chat panel. To the right is the Content area where the main content such as PowerPoint presentations and whiteboards are shown.Above the content area are the presenter/moderator controls where you can load and change the content that is shown.
As you’ve already seen , Blackboard Collaborate includes high-quality, two-way audio. You can also use a telephone conference and have the streaming/VoIP audio mixed with the telephone audio – the telephone participants will hear the VoIP audio and vice-versa.You can use regular headsets and speakers as well as USB audio devices. The participant panel shows when you’re talking and shows who else is talking.
A very popular feature is the ability to use video and web cameras for video conferencing. You can use low-cost USB webcams and still get high quality video.Up to 6 cameras can be used simultaneously. You can choose to follow the speaker, where the system will automatically change what video is shown, based on the audio heard.
You can even save a picture from the video area to the whiteboard if you want to annotate on top of the picture. This comes in very handy if you have a USB video device such as a document camera or even microscope.
The participants panel shows all the session participants and allows them to interact with the presenter(s) and other people in the session using various interaction tools. The moderator can grant or revoke permissions from anyone in the session easily by clicking the menu next to a participant’s name and even lower all hands.
You can show the presenter you’re confused or happy about something by using the emoticons (happy face icon). You can raise your hand if you have a question or would like to speak. You can also do an on-the-fly poll and see the results right within the participants panel.
The Chat panel is where participants can chat amongst themselves or with the entire “room”. Moderators can also chat privately in a back channel, away from the main room. All chat, including private chat can be supervised by the moderator.
Profiles in Blackboard Collaborate bring that “personal feeling” into virtual meetings. By uploading your picture, you’re reminding the audience that there’s an actual person on the other side. The profile picture is shown when video isn’t, preventing the video section from being blank. The ability to show/hide profile information is controllable by the moderator.
Within the session, the moderator can do on-the-fly polling from within the Participants panel, asking yes/no, true/false and multiple choice questions by verbally asking a question or by having the questions in a PowerPoint slide or the whiteboard.
In addition to polling, the moderator can use pre-made quizzes by using the Quiz Manager (Window > Quiz Manager). Quiz questions can be true/false, multiple choice and short text. When the student “hands in” the quiz, their answer is locked. The answers can be shown or hidden by the moderator and the results can be exported by the moderator.
The whiteboard is the heart of the Web Conference. You can Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentations, OpenOffice Presentations or create whiteboard slides on-the-fly from within the session. All content on the whiteboard is a different object and can be moved as needed. I’ll show you how it works right now with the annotation tools. Anyone with whiteboard permission can annotate or draw at the same time.
The whiteboard has some enhanced editing capabilities such as multiple fonts, colors, sizes, even transparency for drawn shapes. You can even drag in a picture and annotate on top of it.
Additionally, we’ve included several pre-made clipart objects such as common shapes, symbols and maps. You can use the page explorer to quickly and easily jump to any page in the presentation or just sneak a peek at what slide is coming up next.
The Application Sharing feature is the 2nd button in the Collaboration Toolbar and is a very powerful tool. With it, you can show and share any application running on your computer. The participant doesn’t need any third party software, and can view and even remotely control your computer if you grant them permission.
You can also take a picture of the application on your computer from within Application Sharing and save it to the room’s whiteboard for markup.
The web tour function is the third basic tool that’s available in the Collaboration Toolbar. To use it, you just type a web page in the box. If the “follow me” checkbox is selected, any link the moderator clicks will be followed by the participants. If it’s unchecked, the participant can interact on their own until the moderator pulls them back. This is a great way to allow students to experiment on their own or do some quick research.
Next I’ll demonstrate how multimedia files/videos can be shown to participants. When I load a multimedia file into the library, it is cached in the background for each participant independently. This allows the student to play the video without having to worry about bandwidth – the video is actually saved in a temporary location on the student’s hard drive. Blackboard Collaborate supports the most common image formats of JPEG, Gif and PNG, as well as the following video files: Windows Media WMV, Adobe Flash SWF files, Apple Quicktime and MPEG videos. Additionally, you can send participants to a web page such as YouTube using the web tour feature if you don’t have the video file on your hard drive.
To increase interactivity and keep your student’s attention, you can use the breakout room function. This works just like sending students into small groups within the classroom. You can manually assign students to groups or use the built-in wizard to randomly assign them on-the-fly. All functionality is available to breakout rooms, and the instructor can see what’s going on within the breakout rooms during and after.
During the session, participants can take notes. This is a great way to provide feedback on content and work on group projects.
As with any class, there’s handouts and homework. By using the file sharing functionality, an instructor can push files to students from within the console. The files distributed are even available in recordings. I’ll push some files to you now.
It’s always a great idea to record classes so students can review them later, even if they were in the class. The recording feature records all slides/whiteboards, audio, video, chat and files distributed during the session. The recording is made in a compact Blackboard Collaborate “VCR” format that can be converted using the “Publish” application which we’ll talk about shortly.
The optional Publish application allows you to easily convert recordings made during the session into many popular offline formats, allowing you to listen and watch recordings on your computer, pda and tablet.
The Plan application is a desktop tool that allows instructors to pre-make and pre-package content. Once your content is created, you can simply load the plan file into the session and all your content is available.
As we all know, making classroom content available to all students regardless of ability is very important. Blackboard Collaborate is a leader in virtual class accessibility with our newly redesigned application. The activity window was completely redesigned specifically to make it easier for screen-readers to use. Users can also use the command-line interface to enter commands that would normally be done with a mouse. Additionally, Blackboard Collaborate has support for 3rd party Closed Captioning services, and closed captioning is available within recordings.
Capability:Blackboard Collaborate 11 supports standards that enable interoperability and technology choice, regardless of your LMS strategy. We support Blackboard Learn/Vista/CE/ANGEL, Desire2Learn, Moodle, Plateau, Pearson LearningStudio, and Sakai. Plus, there’s an API for custom integrations. What sets us apart is that we provide integrations to all of our major capabiliites – web conferencing, enterprise instant messaging, and voice authoring.
How can Blackboard Collaborate 11 benefit your institution? By providing a collaboration platform designed to help you:Reduce cost –by reducing or eliminating travel costs, enabling efficient meetings and professional development. We have case studies and whitepapers that I’d be happy to send you on how schools have saved tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars using Blackboard Collaborate.Increase revenue by expanding the reach of your classroom, and increasing enrollments. Many colleges, especially community colleges across the nation have had to dramatically increase their enrollments because of the economy. Without virtual classrooms, they wouldn’t be able to meet the needs of the rapidly growing numbers of students.Improving outcomes by enabling more student-to-student engagement, global collaborations and efficient access to help.
