1. Audience
Audience is the people/person that read a text. A
target audience is a group or individuals targeted
by a producer as the intended consumer of
media text.
An audience can be categorised by gender, age,
sexuality, ethnicity and other characteristics.
2. My Audience
After looking at Indie Rock in more depth it has a popular following
from older teenagers and young adults. This is why I have set my
target audience of people aged 16-30. Both genders are interested
in Indie Rock so my magazine will have to be suitable for both.
Sexually and ethnically a range of people listen to indie rock as well
as produce it so again the magazine can’t exclude the minorities.
Socially it tends to be more working class people that listen to indie
rock but this has changed since its increase in popularity but I will
have to bare this is mind when pricing it.
I am going to conduct a survey to find out what my target audience
want to see from a new indie rock magazine. This will help me find
out style, layout, information, pricing and so on. I am going to ask 50
people, 25 male and 25 female and a range of ages between 16-30.
The first question I asked was ‘Would they be interested in a new
Indie Rock music magazine?’ if they said yes I would carry on with
the survey as their information would be useful.
I will upload the survey I used in my next blog post.
3. The Results
40 people liked my name ‘Talkin’ Tunes’ for my magazine name which is a large
majority so it is the name I am going to use. I am going to play with it when
designing my front cover to see what looks good.
A surprising 39 people would prefer to have this magazine on a monthly basis
compared to the 11 that want it weekly. The magazine will have more pages and
stories than that of a weekly one. I plan on providing a lot of information for the
readers now that it is a monthly magazine.
The main thing people want to see from my magazine is new music, 48 people
wanted to hear about new music from my magazine, because of this I will now
have a new music section near the front of the magazine. Reviews and interviews
were also popular as I expected with 46 people wanting both of them, these will
be done throughout my magazine on different bands. I am going to have a review
section on the 7 albums that come out the following month. People want to know
about upcoming gigs and albums so this will be incorporated into the story and will
I have a section for additional albums and gigs. Only 13 people wanted to see
gossip within the magazine so I will include it but only a little, I plan on having a
‘What’s Happening’ page towards the back. Again a few people would like to see
posters so I am going to giveaway a free poster with every issue every 3 or 4
months or when I have a really big story in an issue.
I can ignore the weekly pricing question as people want the magazine monthly. 37
people said they would be willing to pay £4 - £4.99 which is the largest figure I got
so I will be pricing my magazine in this bracket.
I will now conduct some interviews with my audience to gain extra information.
