Galileo is Europe's initiative for a global satellite navigation system providing precise positioning under civilian control. It will be interoperable with GPS and GLONASS, consisting of 30 satellites plus spares when complete. Precise timing from Galileo's onboard atomic clocks, accurate to 1 second every 3 million years, will support applications like power grids, financial networks, UAVs, autonomous vehicles, and emergency response.
This document discusses opportunities and challenges for road user charging (RUC) in Europe using European GNSS systems like Galileo and EGNOS. It describes how GNSS technologies enable universal tolling schemes for heavy goods vehicles and light vehicles. GNSS is also driving the expansion of congestion charging schemes in many European cities. Cutting-edge technologies, particularly multi-constellation GNSS, are preparing the ground for new RUC applications and a more technology-driven RUC market. GNSS provides opportunities for more flexible, extensive and low-cost tolling and congestion management across Europe.
Continental Mapping was contracted to provide mapping services to support the reconfiguration of a dangerous railroad crossing in Minnesota. The crossing had issues with collisions between trains and motor vehicles, resulting in deaths, injuries, and delays. Continental Mapping used aerial photography to produce high-accuracy contour maps and planimetric maps of the area to identify options for rerouting the crossing to reduce safety risks from the blind curve and busy double track railroad. The maps were delivered in a 3D digital format to support redesigning the crossing configuration.
Continental Mapping is an expert in transportation infrastructure mapping with over 16 years of experience working with state and local agencies. They offer mobile and terrestrial lidar, aerial lidar, photogrammetry, and survey services. In 2015, they completed the first mobile lidar-led asset management job for the Minnesota DOT and the largest photogrammetry project for the Wisconsin DOT. Survey work establishes high accuracy and was used to map right of ways at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
This document provides a summary of the status of European GNSS programs including Galileo and EGNOS. It discusses that Galileo has deployed 14 operational satellites so far with 4 more planned for this year. Galileo initial services are expected to be available by the end of 2016. The European Commission adopted the Space Strategy in October 2016 which aims to promote the uptake and development of space services and applications. Finally, the document outlines research opportunities in GNSS technologies with over 400 million euros allocated for research from 2014-2020 across the Galileo and EGNOS programs.
The document discusses the regulatory perspective on adopting GNSS (global navigation satellite systems) in rail systems. It notes that rail needs to innovate to remain competitive and that GNSS can help decrease costs and increase efficiency by providing train positioning without the need for trackside infrastructure. However, it also discusses technical challenges for GNSS in rail like signal interference and obscured signals. The document emphasizes that innovation and interoperability are not contradictory in rail, and that a compatible evolution of onboard systems is needed while ensuring safety throughout the innovation process.

Are you the next European GNSS application entrepreneur? The European GNSS Agency (GSA), a European Union agency, works with the European Commission on a range of activities aimed at helping European entrepreneurs and businesses take commercial advantage of European GNSS (EGNOS and Galileo). The GSA Special Prize rewards the year's most promising application idea for European GNSS. This year's winner will have the opportunity to advance their idea at a suitable incubation centre of their choice within the EU-27 for six months, with an additional six months possible based on an interim evaluation.
Sign up from 1 April - 30 June at www.esnc.eu
The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) is an international contest that awards the best services, products, or business innovations using satellite navigation in everyday life. Since 2004, ESNC’s mission has been to spur on development of market-driven applications based on satellite navigation technologies, including EGNOS and Galileo. Within the past nine years more than 6,000 developers took part in the ESNC.
This year’s prize pool is worth EUR 1 million including cash, business incubation, coaching, patent consulting, prototyping and marketing support, access to customers and user communities, and publicity in the world’s leading satellite navigation network. Winners of the 25 regional and 7 special prizes will be in the running for the grand prize of EUR 20,000 and six months incubation in a regional centre of choice.
Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) enable countless applications here on Earth. Submissions are welcome in any relevant application field, including: Location Based Services, Smart Moving, Safety & Security,Navigation, Health, Energy, Augmented Reality, Gaming, Sports & Tracking, Public & Social Services, Agriculture and many more.
Vojtech Fort presents R&D Initiatives related to European GNSS during "Satellite solutions for smarter islands" Conference organised by Eurisy in Malta. "Initial Services", the new phase of the Galileo programMarco Lisi
The Galileo satellite navigation system declared its "Initial Services" operational in December 2016. This marked the beginning of Galileo providing positioning, navigation, and timing services to European and global users, though with limited capabilities due to an incomplete satellite constellation. The "Initial Services" include open services with global availability, as well as search and rescue services. While performance is lower than when Galileo is complete, the initial services provide immediate benefits to users and open the door to important regulated services in Europe. The declaration of initial services confirms the strategic and technological value of the Galileo program for Europe.
Since last year:
THIRD SUCCESSFUL QUAD LAUNCH in July 2018 with ARIANE V
26 Satellites in orbit
Initial SERVICES beyond expectation
New procurement initiated for subsequent satellites
Commercial Service re-baselined
Emergency Warning Service under definition
Launch of User Consultation Platform
Towards Galileo 2nd GENERATION decision
The European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) will award a special prize at ERL Emergency 2019 focusing on robots that make use of solutions based on Galileo and EGNOS.
For air robots, this challenge will involve two types of tasks: horizontal accuracy in landings at a specific geographic coordinate; and vertical accuracy while hovering at a specific geographic coordinate. Building smart green mobility in South Tyrol through an open data hubSpeck&Tech
ABSTRACT: For decades the traditional approach for solving mobility and transportation challenges has been based on the idea of creating new road or rail infrastructures. Thanks to the impressive enhancement of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies, in the last years this approach is going into the direction of rather improving the efficiency of how available transportation infrastructure is used. New digital infrastructures allow all mobility actors (vehicles, pedestrians, sensors, traffic management centers) to cooperate together to achieve the ambitious goal of improving mobility, enhancing safety, reducing congestion and environmental impacts. But how can we achieve this and ensure that public and private actors efficiently work together? In South Tyrol we have tried to give an answer to these challenges through the implementation of an open data hub, which enables the real-time data / information exchange among all interested parties and fosters the multiplication of development of research & innovation projects between local companies, research centers and public organizations. After years of implementation, the Open Data Hub South Tyrol is now creating the premises for a new historical phase for mobility in the region, with concepts like Mobility-as-a-Service or environmental traffic management that are finally moving from research to deployment.
BIO: Roberto Cavaliere is an ITS Project Manager at NOI Techpark Südtirol / Alto Adige, a public-owned organization in the Italian alpine region of South Tyrol coordinating the NOI Tech Park and with the mission to drive and foster research & innovation in the region. Roberto is the reference person in NOI for all initiatives in the field of ITS and smart mobility and in the last 10 years has coordinated a relevant number of EU-funded projects in this field. His main interests cover cooperative systems, autonomous driving, ITS for the environment, mobility-as-a-service and sharing mobility, road weather information systems (RWIS).
