This presentation thoroughly introduces hydraulic structures. Specifically, it explains different types of hydraulic structures, dams and reservoirs, parts of storage dams, classification of dams, storage calculations, different types of dams, characteristics of embankment dams, engineering activities for site investigation and construction of dams, site selection of dams, and foundation of dams and its treatment.
Corries, arêtes, and pyramidal peaks are distinctive landforms resulting from different erosion processes. Corries form in sheltered mountain hollows where snow collects and forms glaciers. Glacial erosion deepens and widens the corries over time. Arêtes are narrow, knife-edge ridges that form between adjacent corries. Pyramidal peaks form when three or more corries erode back into a mountain, leaving behind a horn-shaped peak.
This document discusses surface runoff and stream gauging. It defines key terms like drainage basin, contour lines, stream ordering, and form factor. It describes how to delineate a basin using a topo map and assign stream orders. Factors that affect runoff include basin characteristics, climate, land use, soil and storage. Stream gauging involves measuring stage using staff gauges or recorders, and discharge using the velocity-area method by dividing the cross-section into vertical subsections.

A fluvial system consists of channels that transport sediment from drainage basins to depositional basins. It can be divided into channel belts, floodplains, and splay deposits. Discharge is the volume of water passing through a stream over time and controls the sediment transport capacity and competence. Meandering streams migrate laterally through erosion on the outside bend and deposition on the inside bend, eventually forming oxbow lakes when neck cut-offs occur. Flooding occurs when discharge exceeds channel capacity.
1. Canals are constructed to carry water from rivers or reservoirs to irrigate fields. They are generally aligned along contours, ridges, or side slopes.
2. Contour canals follow elevation contours except for the required slope, allowing irrigation on one side. Ridge canals along dividing ridges allow irrigation on both sides.
3. Side slope canals run perpendicular to contours, parallel to natural drainage, avoiding the need for cross drainage structures. Proper geological investigation is important for determining appropriate canal alignments and designs.

Bihu Festival
The Bihu festival is undoubtedly the most iconic and celebrated festival in Assam. It's not just one festival but a trio of celebrations that coincide with the agricultural cycles. These are Rongali Bihu (Bohag Bihu), Magh Bihu (Bhogali Bihu), and Kati Bihu (Kangali Bihu).
Rongali Bihu (Bohag Bihu)
Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, marks the Assamese New Year and the arrival of spring. It's a time when the air is filled with melodious Bihu songs, and the countryside echoes with the rhythmic beats of traditional Bihu dances. Homes are adorned with colorful rangolis, and young men and women perform the Bihu dance with grace and enthusiasm. The Bihu delicacies like pithas and larus add to the festive spirit.
The significance of Rongali Bihu goes beyond its joyous celebrations. It is a festival deeply rooted in Assamese agrarian traditions. During this time, farmers prepare their fields for the upcoming cultivation season, and the festival serves as a harbinger of hope and prosperity.
Magh Bihu (Bhogali Bihu)
Magh Bihu, or Bhogali Bihu, is all about feasting and merriment. The heart of this festival lies in community bonfires known as "Meji." People come together around these bonfires, and it's a time for grand feasts featuring traditional Assamese dishes, including mouthwatering sweets. Cultural competitions and games are also a highlight of Magh Bihu celebrations.
The bonfires, known as "Meji" or "Bhelaghar," symbolize the harvest season's end and the onset of a period of plenty. The offerings made to the fire god Agni during these bonfires are a way of giving thanks for the bountiful harvest.
Kati Bihu (Kangali Bihu)

This document summarizes the major physical features of India, dividing the country into several physiographic divisions formed by geological processes. The Himalayas were formed by the collision of the Indian plate with Eurasia. Other divisions include the Northern Plains formed by sediment deposition along river systems, the Peninsular Plateau comprising older crystalline rocks, the Indian Desert, and Coastal Plains. Each region has unique climates and landscapes that have influenced civilization and hold natural resource potential.
The Potwar plateau and Salt range is located between the Indus and Jhelum Rivers in Pakistan. It has an undulating landscape with flat areas and residual hills. The region is rich in minerals like gypsum, limestone, rock salt, coal and oil. Important places in the area include the salt mines at Khewra and peaks like Sakesar which reach over 1500 meters. The economy relies on mining of minerals and some oil and gas extraction, providing resources for industries. Farming depends on rainfall due to the rugged terrain not being suitable for irrigation canals.
Reservoirs are created by retaining excess water from periods of high flow to be used during low flow periods. Their purposes include irrigation, hydroelectric power, and water supply. Planning a reservoir involves engineering surveys to determine storage capacity and area, geological investigations to evaluate the foundation and basin, and hydrological investigations to study runoff patterns and floods. Key considerations in reservoir site selection include suitable dam location, minimum submerged land, avoiding high sediment rivers, and maximizing storage capacity. Reservoirs have zones like normal pool level, minimum pool level, and maximum pool level. Yield depends on inflow and storage changes. Mass and demand curves help determine required reservoir capacity and safe yield.
Water is essential for life but cities face challenges in securing adequate supplies. Bangalore gets its water from the Cauvery River 95 km away and 500 meters below the city. Most households get water through taps connected to overhead tanks that are pumped full from underground sumps, but many lack piped connections and rely on tankers or borewells. After use, water is meant to go through sewer systems to treatment plants before reaching lakes, but mixed sewage and stormwater often bypass treatment. Individuals and cities can harvest rainwater and recharge groundwater to help address flooding and scarcity issues.
Rivers carry large amounts of water and sediment. They can be classified based on their topography into upper reach rivers flowing through hills, lower reach rivers flowing through flood plains, and tidal rivers. River training works are constructed to guide and confine river flows, control river beds, and ensure safe flood passage. Methods for river training include embankments/levees, guide banks, groynes, cutoffs, and pitched islands. Guide banks are constructed in pairs to create a waterway and prevent structures from being outflanked by the river.
This document discusses various bays, coastlines, and peninsulas located around Pakistan. It defines a bay as an indentation of the shoreline that connects to an ocean or lake. It provides examples of bays in Pakistan such as Gwadar Bay, Mubarak Goth, and Sonmiani Bay. It notes that the longest coastline in Pakistan is the 771 km Balochistan Coastline, with the total coastal area being around 1100 km along the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan on the Arabian Sea. It also defines a peninsula as land surrounded by water on three sides connected to mainland, providing the Arabian Peninsula and Manora Peninsula in Karachi as examples.
1. Current meters measure the velocity of fluid flow using various mechanical, electrical, or optical methods.
2. The most commonly used current meters for irrigation and watershed measurements are anemometer and propeller types, which measure velocity using rotating cups or propellers.
3. However, electromagnetic current meters that produce voltage proportional to flow velocity are also widely used, especially by water districts, as they provide direct analog readings without moving parts.
Rivers and streams begin as small tributaries that merge to form larger rivers as they flow downhill towards areas of lower elevation. They perform erosion by processes such as attrition, corrasion, hydraulic action, and chemical solution, and transport sediment through dissolution, suspension, and along the stream bed. A stream's competence and capacity determine the size of materials it can carry. Channel morphology depends on factors like gradient and sediment load, resulting in narrow channels in steep upper reaches and wider braided or meandering patterns downstream. Within channels, features like bars, point bars, and floodplains form through sediment deposition during times of changing flow.
A braided channel consists of a network of smaller interconnected channels separated by small, temporary islands called eyots or braid bars. Braiding occurs when a river's sediment load and slope exceeds a threshold, causing deposition that divides the channel. This often happens after heavy rainfall, when discharge levels fluctuate. Braided channels are common where coarse sediments like sand and gravel are carried, such as in the wide, shallow valleys of rivers with little slope.
