La Divina comedia, escrita por el florentino Dante Alighieri entre 1304 y 1321 aproximadamente, es un poema épico, género literario que consiste en la narración en verso de las hazañas de los héroes. Tales hazañas constituyen un modelo de virtud, sean verdaderas o ficticias. Este texto representa un compendio de la cultura y el conocimiento medieval, tanto en lo religioso como en lo filosófico, científico y moral.
Divina Comedia sigue el camino desde el centro de la Tierra, donde se halla Lucifer, hasta el dominio de Dios. El tema de la obra es el recorrido del poeta a través del más allá. En su obra se encuentra gran capacidad para describir el infierno, los círculos, los sufrimientos y los pecadores.
Podemos resumir la estructura y características de la Divina comedia de la siguiente manera:
Un canto introductorio.
Tres capítulos llamados Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso.
Cada capítulo está dividido en treinta y tres cantos.
La obra suma cien cantos en total.
El infierno está formado por nueve círculos.
El purgatorio está formado por nueve estancias divididas en: la antesala, los siete gradas y el paraíso terrenal.
El paraíso está estructurado en nueve esferas y el empíreo.
Todos los cantos están escritos en terza rima —verso creado por Dante—, cuyas estrofas están compuestas por tercetos endecasílabos de rima entrelazada.
¿Por qué Dante organiza la obra de este modo? Debido al valor simbólico que tenían los números en el imaginario medieval. Por ello, juegan un papel importante en la organización del texto y en la exposición de las ideas de la Divina comedia. A saber:
el número tres, símbolo de la perfección divina y de la Santísima Trinidad;
el número cuatro, referido a los cuatro elementos, tierra, aire, agua y fuego;
el número siete, símbolo de lo cabal, completo. Referido también a los pecados capitales;
el número nueve, símbolo de la sabiduría y la búsqueda del sumo bien;
el número cien, símbolo de la perfección.
