Nairo Quintana siente que han cambiado muchas cosas
para él desde que Movistar Team le dio la alternativa en
el campo profesional en 2012. “He ganado mucha ma-
durez y tranquilidad, y tengo un equipo muy sólido
que me ayuda en todo lo que puede. Mil cosas han
cambiado, todas para bien”. Por ello y por su excel-
sa temporada, siente que este sí puede ser el año del
asalto al Tour de Francia: “Hemos hecho las cosas bien,
hemos tenido buenas actuaciones en todas las vuel-
tas por etapas donde hemos estado, ganando tres de
ellas y siendo podio en San Luis y País Vasco. Esta-
mos bien preparados”.
“Descansé un poco más en el invierno para tener
mayor sensación de frescura y durante la tempo-
rada se ha demostrado que fue un acierto. Ganar
dos carreras WorldTour que no estaban en mi pal-
marés fue emocionante y me dio tranquilidad. El
equipo se ha adaptado cada vez mejor a mí, y yo a
ellos, y siempre doy lo mejor de mí”, asegura el de
Cómbita, que procura siempre, consciente de su
enorme popularidad, ofrecer “una sonrisa para
todo el mundo”.
Del recorrido le gustan “las montañas. Este
Tour tiene unas llegadas en alto muy boni-
tas, con las que me identifico. Andorra será
una jornada bastante dura, con mucho desni-
vel, que ya hará bastante daño en las piernas.
Al Mont Ventoux espero llegar en mejor forma
que en 2013 y hacerlo aún mejor. Y llegar a
Morzine me llena de emoción: allí logré mi
primera gran victoria, antes rivales muy im-
portantes, en el Dauphiné de 2012”. Tam-
poco le disgustan las cronos: “En la Caverne
habrá que ir con cabeza, será muy complicada
tras Pirineos y Ventoux y realmente exigente;
la de Megève, aunque lo parezca, no será una
cronoescalada como tal y tampoco tan deci-
siva como se presume, pues quedarán etapas
importantes, pero quien tenga mal día perderá
bastante tiempo”.
Nairo asume que “cometimos un error en Holanda
en 2015 y este año no nos vamos a descuidar”.
Teme al “estrés de competición, al peligro y las caí-
das”, pero sabe que tendrá “un equipo potente, co-
rredores hábiles para manejarse en el llano y gente
de calidad en la montaña”. Entre ellos, un Alejan-
dro Valverde que a buen seguro infundirá “res-
peto en los rivales” y le trae “mucha alegría. Es
un gran refuerzo que dará el ciento por ciento para
conseguir el #SUEÑOAMARILLO”.
“Froome y Contador son los principales rivales, pero
hay otros corredores importantes que no debemos
descuidar”, subraya un Quintana que se confiesa nada
supersticioso, “aunque a un amigo le prometí hace años
que si ganaba le llevaría un leoncito del podio”. “Agra-
dezco todos los mensajes de apoyo en las redes,
me llenan de emoción y fuerzas para seguir luchando
por ese #SUEÑOAMARILLO. ¡Nos vemos en París!”
Nairo Quintana feels like many things have changed since the Movistar Team
got him into the pro scene back in 2012. “I’m much more mature and
calm, and I’ve got a strong team by my side which helps me out whe-
rever they can. Thousand things have changed, all for the better.”
That’s one reason to believe he’s ready to finally win the Tour de France. The
other one is his amazing season: “We did things right, rode well in all stage-
races we took part in since January, winning three of them and making the
podium in San Luis and País Vasco. We’re well prepared for this challenge.”
“I rested up a bit more than normal in the winter to come into the ra-
cing season fresher, and it’s been proven during it that we were right.
Winning two WorldTour races that wasn’t yet on my palmarès was so
exciting, and made me more confident. The team is growing more
adapted to my needs, I feel better and better with them, and always
offer my best,” says the Cómbita rider, who always tries - conscious
about his increasing popularity - to “offer a smile to everyone I
come across.”
“I like the mountains on this year’s route. The Tour’s moun-
tain-top finishes are ones I enjoy so much. Andorra will be al-
ready pretty hard and make some gaps. Mont Ventoux - I hope to
do better than in 2013 and get closer to te win. And then there’s
Morzine,aplaceIholddearinmyheartasItookmyfirstbigprowin
there in the 2013 Dauphiné.” He doesn’t dislike the TTs, either: “La
Caverne’s requires strength of mind, and will be extra tough coming
after Ventoux and the Pyrenees; Megève’s won’t be so decisive nor
a real mountain TT, because the mountains will come afterwards.
However, one in bad form could lose the race there.”
Nairo assumes “we made a mistake in the Netherlands in 2015, and
we can’t fail again.” He fears “the stress of racing, danger and crashes,”
yet he knows he’ll have “a powerful team, with plenty of good rouleurs
plus talented climbers.” That includes Alejandro Valverde, one to be
“respected by our rivals” and a “huge addition, which makes me
so happy. We know he will give his 100% for the #SUEÑOAMARILLO.”
“Froome and Contador will be the biggest rivales, but many others are to
follow and be aware of,” underlines Quintana, who assures not to be any
superstitious, “though I promised a friend of mine to bring him a lion from
the podium ceremonies if I got to win the Tour.” “I thank everyone for
their messages on social media - they bring me so much strength to
keep seeking for this #SUEÑOAMARILLO. See you in Paris!”

El ‘Bala’ se ganó el cielo el pasado 29 de
mayo cuando logró completar el ‘círcu-
lo’ de podios en las tres grandes rondas
por etapas con su tercera posición en el
Giro de Italia. Un podio a base de coraje en
momentos inesperados -fue él quien rompió
la carrera en Alpe di Poti, desbancando a Tom
Dumoulin, y quien más agitó el árbol en Anda-
lo, para lograr su primera victoria de etapa en la
‘Corsa Rosa’- y de resiliencia en los momentos
difíciles, que en su caso fueron dos y muy duros:
Corvara y Risoul.
Recuperado ya de aquella empresa y con la tran-
quilidad de tener ya la temporada prácticamente
cumplida -incluso aunque resulte atrevido verlo así
en el caso del, quizás, único ciclista en el mundo
con la consistencia por bandera de enero a octubre-,
Alejandro Valverde llega a la salida del Mont-Saint-
Michel con sus objetivos claros. “Al Tour vamos a ir
a ayudar a Nairo Quintana. Ya dejo bastante claro,
desde ya, que en la primera semana seré uno de los
corredores que se dejará algún tiempo, para luego es-
tar mejor en la montaña y apoyar a Nairo”.
“Si es posible, y sin que sea un estorbo para el
equipo, intentaría también buscar alguna victoria
de etapa o filtrarme por delante y ser una ayuda
desde ahí. La referencia principal para ese Tour es el
#SUEÑOAMARILLO, conseguir por fin el Tour con Nairo,
y después aspirar a todo en los Juegos”. Sin duda, todo
un lujo contar como gregario con el tercer clasificado de
la última ‘Grande Boucle’.
‘Bala’ earned another big place in cycling history back on
29 May, when he completed the treble of podium fin-
ishes in Grand Tours by taking 3rd overall in the Giro
d’Italia. A well-deserved place, following courageous rides
in unexpected places -he was the one attacking from the
foot of Alpe di Poti and derailing Tom Dumoulin, and the
one putting more eggs on the basket of a vibrantestage
16 in Andalo, where he claimed his maiden ‘Corsa Rosa’
success- and resilient performances in two difficult mo-
mentsforhim:the‘raceoftruth’towardsCorvara,Queen
stage on day 14, and the pursuit towards Risoul.
Recovered from such a grueling exploit and more than
calm after what’s arguably finished business for him
this season -even if it looks utterly optimistic to quali-
fy that way what’s only half the schedule of the most
consistent rider to have made part of the peloton for
decades-, Alejandro Valverde comes into the start of
the Mont-Saint-Michel with clear goals in mind. “We
will go to the Tour in order to support Nairo
Quintana. I want to make it clear, from this very
moment, that I will be losing time on the first week
and take things easier so I can help Nairo out and
give my best in the mountains.
“Also, if it’s possible and it doesn’t compro-
mise the team’s goals, I’d like to chase some
stage wins or make it into the break and
help the team from there. Our motto for the
Tour remains the #SUEÑOAMARILLO, win-
ning the Tour with Nairo at last, and then, the
Rio Games”. Quite a honour for Nairo to have
last year’s third-placed finisher at his service!

“Correr el Tour representa ser parte de una especie de ‘selección
natural’ dentro de la elite del ciclismo. Coger una fuga o
destacar aquí vale seis veces más que en cualquier otra
cita del calendario. El Tour lo corre la gente que mejor
está, que mejor trabajo puede hacer, y entrar en la
selección del Movistar Team es difícil y te da
satisfacción”. Nadie mejor que Imanol Erviti para
explicar lo que vale estar siete años seguidos en
la vuelta por etapas de mayor competitividad. En
esta ocasión, tras un inicio de temporada donde ha
disfrutado incluso de mayores elogios que los que de
por sí depara con su excelente trabajo. Sus top-ten
en Flandes (7º) y Roubaix (9º), únicos en la historia
del equipo, le han dado un caché aún más generoso.
“Mi rol, y prácticamente el del resto de los compañeros,
va a ser tratar de que Nairo llegue al momento
clave donde y como tiene que llegar. Te puede
tocar bajar a por agua, ir al coche a por una prenda
de abrigo, buscarle comida, tirar en el llano, empujar
en subida, hacer una bajada rápida y arriesgando el
tipo porque nos interesa por situación de carrera…
Son mil situaciones diversas, no sabes cuál te va a
tocar y por eso tratas de llegar lo mejor preparado y
dispuesto a vaciarte en el esfuerzo”.
“Hemos trabajado mucho y ahora es el momento
de ver dónde estamos. Veo un Tour súper intere-
sante. Hay varios contendientes a un nivel muy
parejo, pero confío mucho en Nairo. Lleva una
gran temporada, el recorrido es bueno para sus

la que supo manejar la presión de ser líder del
equipo desde el inicio en 2015 le haga correr

ce in the world for seven consecutive times. And in
2016, he comes into France after having enjoyed
even more praise that he’s always done thanks to
his excellent teamwork. Top-ten finishes in both
Flanders (7th) and Roubaix (9th), the only ones
in the squad’s history, have increased his prestige.
“My role, and probably the rest of my team-mates’,
will be making sure that Nairo reaches the cru-
cial moments in the right spot and condition. You
might have to get back for water, search your team
car for some warm clothes, bring him food, pushing at
the front in the flat, pushing into the mountains, take
risks into descents because it’s interesting for the team
from a strategical point of view... There are thousands
of different situations, and as you never know what will
come around, you must get to the race at your best, and
ready to give your all.”
“We’ve worked so much; now it’s time to see how we fare.
This Tour looks so exciting. There are many close conten-
ders, but I really trust Nairo. He’s done an amazing sea-
son so far, the route really suits him, and I hope that he can
keep building on the maturity he showed last year when
riding as team leader from stage one. He’s already proven so
during this year.”

Segundo Tour consecutivo con Movistar
Team para el mayor de los Izagirre, quizás
el más polivalente -junto con Alejandro Val-
verde, cuya talla sobrepasa cualquier compa-
ración- de todos los hombres de apoyo con
los que Nairo Quintana contará durante
este Tour. El héroe de aquella etapa del Stelvio
en el Giro 2014 volverá sin duda a ser un grega-
rio más que fiable en todos los terrenos: sabe ro-
dar fuerte en el llano, se maneja como pez en el
agua en las fugas y tiene un aguante tremendo
en la media y alta montaña.
Su temporada está siendo regular en grado extre-
mo: ha participado en seis vueltas por etapas
en 2016 y en todas ellas ha acabado entre
los veinticinco primeros. En algunas de ellas ha
cuajado papeles de mucho nivel -fue 5º en el Dubai
Tour-, en pruebas de un día también ha dado el ‘do
de pecho’ -fue 2º, tras su compañero Giovanni Vis-
conti, en Amorebieta- y sólo la inoportuna gastroen-
teritis sufrida por su hermano Ion y él apartó durante
unos días de la circulación al de Ormaiztegi, justo en
una prueba vital para él como la Vuelta al País Vasco.
Llega en buena forma a la ‘Grande Boucle’ tras
cuajar una excelente Vuelta a Suiza (12º), aguantando
cerca de los mejores en las grandes etapas de montaña
e incluso buscando un zarpazo en aquella durísima etapa
del Klausenpass y Amden. Descansó en Campeonatos.
It will be the second consecutive Tour de France for the
elder of the Izagirre brothers, arguably the most poly-
valent -together with Alejandro Valverde, whose spor-
ting quality is above any comparison- from all riders
supporting Nairo Quintana towards glory in this
Tour. The famous hero from the Stelvio stage in the
2014 Giro d’Italia will be again a reliable domestique for
all terrains: he knows how to push hard on the flat, ri-
des with excellent nose into the breakaways and puts
up with almost everything into both the hills and the
big Alpine and Pyrenean mountains.
His season so far has been extremely regular: he’s
taken part in six stageraces in 2016, finishing
within the fop twenty-five overall in all six of
them. He’s even done pretty well on an individual
point of view at some -he finished fifth overall in
the Dubai Tour-, while also shining on one-day
races -came 2nd behind team-mate Giovanni Vis-
conti, in the Klasika Primavera de Amorebieta-,
and only an ill-timed gastroenteritis suffered by
both his brother Ion and him took the Ormaizte-
gi-born rider out of service, just few hours before
starting his home race Vuelta al País Vasco.
He’s coming in excellent form to the ‘Gran-
de Boucle’ after a great Tour de Suisse, sta-
ying close to GC contenders in the demanding
mountain stages of the Helvetic course and
seeking for glory during a grueling day six.

ANACONA

“Se siente muy bien poder respaldar a un
corredor talentoso, que se sabe que puede
luchar por la victoria, y saber también que
somos un peldaño, una ayuda grande para
alcanzar ese anhelado Tour”. Aunque Winner
Anacona, como él mismo reconoce, siempre
ha tenido “la mentalidad de ganar y así la quie-
ro mantener, ahora cumplo con un rol de gre-
gario, y lo hago de igual manera con gusto.
Siempre he dicho que la carretera se encarga de
poner a cada uno en su sitio”.
Y el sitio de Winner, como demostró en el Tour
2015, es uno de los más altos: el de responder
en primera persona por su líder en los días
más exigentes, cuando la recuperación después
de más de dos semanas de esfuerzo es mínima en
unos y brilla en otros como él. Su escalada al Alpe
d’Huez para intentar hacer posible el #SUEÑOAMA-
RILLO ya estuvo a punto de valer un Tour para Nairo
Quintana.
Llega a esta ‘Grande Boucle’ tras una prestación si-
lenciosa pero constante por Nairo, al que ha acom-
pañado en sus éxitos en Catalunya y Romandía
sin desdeñar tampoco buenos resultados individuales
-sexto en la general de Castilla y León-. Su buen rendi-
miento en la Vuelta a Suiza -despliegue de energía en
la primera jornada de montaña (Carì)- invita a esperar
cosas buenas de este boyacense que participa por se-
gunda vez en el Tour.
“It feels really good to be able to support a very talented
guy, who knows -and we all- he can be in the fight for vic-
tory, and also to know that we’re a step forward, a good
help for him to try and reach that long-awaited success
in the Tour.” Though Winner Anacona, as explained by
himself, has always had “that winning mentality, and
that’s how I’d like to keep it, my role now is a suppor-
tive one, and I fulfil it with pleasure. I’ve always
said that the road is the only one thing which sets
things straight in cycling.”
Winner’s place in the peloton, as shown in the 2015
Tour de France, is one of the highest. He’s in charge
of offering the best response for his leader in
those most demanding days on the final week
of racing, when riders struggle to recover well whi-
le the Tunja-based rider flies across the mountains.
His climb towards Alpe d’Huez, trying to make the
#SUEÑOAMARILLO real last season, was incre-
dibly close to bringing Nairo Quintana his first
yellow jersey.
Anacona is reaching this year’s ‘Grande Boucle’
in good condition, following silent, consistent
performances in favor of Nairo, whom he su-
pported in his sucess in both Catalunya
and Romandie. He hasn’t missed the chance
to shine individually, either, as he finished 6th
in the Vuelta a Castilla y León GC. His good
form at the Tour de Suisse, with a beautiful
breakaway on stage five, brings good hopes.

HERRADA

En gran estado de forma se encamina el menor de los He-
rrada -José disputó el Giro- a su segunda participación en la
‘Grande Boucle’, dos años después de ser apoyo de Valver-
de en un Tour 2014 de sabor tan agridulce en lo colectivo
para Movistar Team, pero donde su labor tanto en fugas
como trabajando para el murciano fue muy notable.
Tras compartir con Nairo éxitos y alegrías en País
Vasco y, sobre todo, en Romandía -la carrera que hace
dos años le vio lucirse entre los mejores escaladores del
WorldTour al terminar 9º en la general-, el conquense ha
completado una aproximación muy adecuada: podio en
Madrid -2º, escoltando al ganador Lobato-, estancias
en Navacerrada, un Dauphiné donde se impuso de
forma brillantísima en la rampa de Chalmazel (2ª
etapa) y dos buenos Campeonatos: 4º CRI, 5º en línea.
Por su habilidad tanto en la media montaña
como en el plano estratégico e incluso en el
plano -buen contrarrelojista-, la labor de Jesús no se
circunscribe a un solo terreno como otros compañe-
ros y cuenta con la polivalencia como gran baza. Un
ciclista que, además, tiene una bonita historia de
amor con Francia: victorias en Route du Sud, Poi-
tou-Charentes y Limousin.
The younger of the Herrada brothers will keep
his surname present into the Movistar Team’s GT
rosters -José rode the Giro- as he fulfils his second
‘Grande Boucle’ appearance. Jesús was present at
the 2014 TDF, a bitter taste on the collective side
yet a notable satisfaction for the Spaniard, both
notable into breakaways and support along-
side Valverde.
Following podiums and success with Nairo in
both País Vasco and Romandie -the latter saw Je-
sús shining against the best climbs in the WorldTour,
9th overall, in 2014-, the man from Mota del Cuervo
near Cuenca completed a great approach towards the
TDF: 2nd-placed in Madrid; good training in Navacerra-
da; then a brilliant Dauphiné as he won the uphill
sprint in Chalmazel, on stage two.
Due to his consistency in both the mid mountains,
the flat -great timetrialist- and his strategic nose,
Jesús’s tasks are not reduced to only one terrain as with
other team-mates: polyvalency is his main value. That
combines with the fact he’s always excelled in France,
having won stages in the Route du Sud, the Tour du Poi-
tou-Charentes and the Tour du Limousin.

Toda una temporada volcada en torno al
Tour de Francia, en apoyar a Nairo Quintana
para lograr su #SUEÑOAMARILLO. Ese es el
motivo por el que Dani Moreno ha rendido en
silencio, sin el brillo individual de tantos otros
muchos años entre los mejores del pelotón
internacional. Cierto es que ha logrado -y no
es fácil hacerlo, ni siquiera cuando vuelves al
equipo de tus amores- una victoria ya para su
amplio palmarés, con la segunda etapa de la
Vuelta a Asturias y el tercer puesto en la general
final, pero a muchos ha llamado la
atención que esos resultados no llega-
sen en el WorldTour. El motivo es simple: su
rol, a punto de cumplir los 35 años, está
plenamente enfocado en apoyar al grupo.
En un equipo ya de por sí potentísimo en la montaña,
el madrileño será, junto a Alejandro Valverde,
un factor desequilibrante. Uno de esos ciclistas
que, si llegan en las mejores condiciones a los días
clave, puede decantar la carrera del lado de Nairo
Quintana. Su primera parte de campaña fue larga:

Cumplido ese trance y de vuelta a casa para descansar
y disfrutar con su bebé y pareja, Dani Moreno mostró ener-
gías renovadas en el Critérium du Dauphiné, 5º en
la brillante victoria de Jesús Herrada, y los Campeona-
tos de España, donde fue 11º. Señales favorables para
un elemento clave en el Movistar Team del Tour 2016.
A long season all focused on the Tour de France, on
supporting Nairo Quintana all the way towards his
#SUEÑOAMARILLO. That’s the reason why Dani Moreno
has performed silently, without the brilliance of previous
seasons as one of the best classics riders and stageracers
in the international peloton The truth is, he’s even tasted
the flavor of success -something not easy to achieve,
even when you return to a place you loved- after four
months into the Movistar Team at the Vuelta a Asturias.
However, many wondered what was happening with a
rider whose biggest sucess has come into WorldTour
races. The reason was simple: his role, closer to
celebrate his 35th birthday, has now switched
entirely towards supporting the team’s leaders.
Into a squad already powerful for the mountains, the
Madrilian will be, alongside Alejandro Valverde,
a huge factor on key days. He’s one of those rid-
ers whom, if in the best condition, will be able to
balance the race in favour of Nairo Quintana. His
first part of the season was long, maybe too much:
“Too many days away from home, training in al-
titude, riding all kinds of races”. Performing well
from San Luis and all the way to the final Spanish
races of the spring in early May isn’t an easy task;
even less so when your daughter Lisa, born dur-
ing the Ardennes, is waiting for you at home.
Over with that long stint and back in Madrid
to rest and enjoy with his family, Dani Moreno
showed to be fully prepared during the Critéri-
um du Dauphiné, when he came 5th in Chal-
mazel as Jesús Herrada succeeded. He also
rode to 11th place in the Spanish Champs.

No ha sido un camino fácil el que debido afrontar Nelson
Oliveira para disputar el Tour de Francia en su primera
temporada con Movistar Team. Una doble lesión -fractura
de clavícula y fisura de la cabeza del radio- durante la
París-Roubaix obligó al luso a permanecer sin
competir casi dos meses hasta el Critérium du
Dauphiné. Por fortuna, el buen trabajo hecho en casa,
con entrenamientos de gran calidad, le permitió llegar
en óptima condición a la ronda alpina, donde buscó
las fugas y mostró su calidad en todos los terrenos.
Esa versatilidad es precisamente uno de los motivos
que le ha valido su plaza en el ‘nueve’ que más se lucha
en Movistar Team. Como flamante cuádruple cam-
peón portugués de crono, se maneja muy bien en el
llano, pero si las necesidades del
equipo obligan a ello, también puede ser
un apoyo de calidad en la media montaña.
En su última ‘grande’ mostró que puede manejar-
se muy bien en todos los terrenos: acabó 21º la
Vuelta a España 2015 tras adjudicarse de manera
brillanteuntriunfoparcial-Tarazona,13ªetapa-,ser
segundo en otra fuga desde lejos camino de Ávila

It hasn’t been an easy path for Nelson Oliveira
to take part in the Tour de France during his
maiden season in Movistar Team colours. A
double injury -collarbone fracture, fissure of the
radial head- suffered at Paris-Roubaix left the
Portuguese rider almost two months out of
competition till he returned at the Critérium du
Dauphiné. However, good preparation training done
at home allowed him reaching the Alpine course in
good condition for all terrains, even making some
interesting breakaways.
That versatility is the main value why Nelson has
made arguably the most fought Grand roster from
the Movistar Team every single season. As the new-
ly-crowned, four-time Portuguese TT Champion, it’s
no wonder he does well on the flat, but should
team needs require it, he also serves as excellent
support into the mountains.
His last Grand Tour appearance proved that fact: he finished
21st overall in the 2015 Vuelta a España after winning
a stage in style -Tarazona, st. 13-, coming second into
another in Ávila and finishing a fine 8th at the
demanding TT of Burgos, both on the final week.

Merecidísima tercera aparición en tierras
francesas para un Ion Izagirre que se ha con-
vertido, de pleno derecho, en el tercer hombre
para las rondas por etapas de Movistar Team.
Más concretamente, las citas de una semana.
Hace algo más de un año tomó la decisión
de dejar a un lado la disputa de la general
en las ‘grandes’ por considerar que “las rondas
de una semana, con contrarreloj y puertos no
tan exigentes”, se ajustaban mejor a sus carac-
terísticas. No se equivocaba: desde agosto de
2015, ha ganado Polonia; finalizado 4º en Va-
lencia, 2º en Algarve o 5º en París-Niza; y se ha
subido al podio de rondas como Romandía o la re-
ciente Vuelta a Suiza. Es 6º en el UCI WorldTour.
Ion llega en un estado de forma envidiable y
con la tranquilidad de saberse un apoyo de
calidad para sus compañeros, todavía en creci-
miento de forma y con la temporada prácticamente
resuelta, seguramente ya la mejor de su trayectoria
profesional. Ya ha asumido en otras pruebas de tres
semanas la condición de gregario con la que viene a
este Tour: lo hizo por Valverde, en días de sufrimiento
para el murciano, durante la ‘Grande Boucle’ de 2014.
Junto a su hermano Gorka, con quien por fin com-
partirá una prueba de estas características tras seis
años compartiendo equipo, Ion aportará cuanto tenga
en todos los terrenos, incluida la media y alta montaña.

Ion Izagirre will enjoy a more-than-deserved third
appearance in the Tour de France, the 27-year-old
Basque having become arguably the ‘third man’ when
it comes to stagerace hierarchy within the Movistar
Team. More precisely, the man to follow for one-week
events in world-class level. Just over one year ago,
he made a choice to leave aside GC contention
in Grand Tours, as he considered that “one-week
races, especially the ones which include a time trial
and not-so-demanding ascents”, suited him better.
He wasn’t wrong: since Augut 2015, he’s won the
Tour de Pologne; finished 4th in Valencia, runner-up
in Algarve, 5th in Paris-Nice; and stepped onto the
podium of both Romandie and the recent Tour de
Suisse. His current 6th place in the UCI World
Tour is a proof of brilliance.
Ion comes in perfect form into the Tour, also
knowing he’ll play perfectly the supporting
role he’s expected to do. He’s still been able to
pick up his pace leading up to this race, and hav-
ing reached the best point of his career, Izagirre
is out of any pressure. He’s already done this job
before: he helped Valverde out as the Spaniard
cracked into the final days of the 2014 TDF.
Alongside elder brother Gorka, with
whom he’ll share ranks at last after no
GTs together in six years of WorldTour rac-
ing, Ion will offer all-round presence so Nairo
can fulfil his #SUEÑOAMARILLO.
