WINNING ONE OF THE PRIZES that carries the
name of Edward R. Murrow, the charismatic journal-
ist portrayed by George Clooney in Good Night, and
Good Luck, is a bit like entering the Hollywood of
journalism. Cameraman and documentary maker
Raúl Gallego (born Sabadell, 1976) now knows that
sensation, but it hasn’t gone to his head. He picks up
his telephone in the early morning in Bangkok, from
where he covers news from Asia and the Middle
East for the AP agency, and talks very naturally
about his job. “I always like to be a bit frightened
to remember the dangers of war: it’s not a film, and
being a journalist and not part of the conflict is not
going to save you”. The young guy from Catalonia
won the prestigious recognition of his work last
October for his online documentary Diary of a U.S
Marine, a portrait of the war in Afghanistan narrated
through the experiences of American marine, Jack
Hausmann, during Operation Strike of the Sword.
“Every one has their own reasons for doing this
type of work. Sometimes you feel the satisfaction of
knowing that you are doing a good report; at other
times you have the sensation that you are living a
moment in history; and at others you ask yourself:
‘just what am I doing here, when it would be so
good to be at home safe and sound?’”
