  • #18 Información y datos que otros han recolectado It will at least tell you if your idea is worth pursuing further There are two major categories of Market Research, Secondary Research and Primary Research. Secondary Research is information and data that someone else has collected, usually for a purpose that is different from your own. Secondary sources of information include newspaper articles, public filings, government agencies (including Census Information), commercial publications, telephone books, trade journals and associations, public libraries and the internet. These sources can provide information on a variety of variables that are important to your product or service.
  • #19 Primary research is information you gather yourself or employ someone to gather and is normally very specific to your business or problem. Primary research methods include postal, telephone, and face to face surveys, as well as in-depth interviews, focus groups, case studies, and website log data. Many businesses will also administer polls or surveys to their customers via their website. Primary data can also be collected from observations and experimenting. For example, you could simply observe customer behaviour while they are shopping in your store and try to get a sense of which people are drawn to certain products and why. Observing sales methods or customer service techniques used by your staff, as well as by your competition, is also a good example of primary research. Experimenting with different primary research methods and measuring the responses can be a good way to determine what methods work best for your business. Let us now use an example to illustrate primary research.
