CA ERwin Data Profiler is part of a broader CA ERwin Modeling Family of products which includes: CA ERwin Data Modeler: our flagship Data Modeling tool CA ERwin Process Model: for Business Process modeling CA ERwin Saphir Option: to extract, analyze, and decipher ERP-related metadata (SAP, Oracle e-Business Suite, etc.) CA ERwin Model Navigator: for read-only access to models. Great for business analysts, developers, etc. CA ERwin Model Manager: repository-based solution for model management, collaboration, versioning, metadata management, etc. Both data and process models. Navigator can also ready from the repository.
If we use a spreadsheet as an example (everyone understands a spreadsheet): The column headings can be considered “metadata” - They describe what the data is, and puts context around the information. If you had a spreadsheet with no headings (or metadata), it would be very difficult to understand what the data in the rows meant. Data modeling (CA ERwin Data Modeler) deals with these column headings, or the metadata. A relational database is obviously more complicated, but this is a close enough example to show the point.
While data modeling looked at the column headings, data profiling looks at the actual rows, or instance data. Most modelers don’t have easy access to analyze this information in an intuitive or cost-effective way.
This is a sample of the analysis that can be performed by CA ERwin Data Profiler. Notice that the results are very intuitive in a graph-like format. Most multi-source data analysis can be very complicated.
Data profiling can help uncover common errors found in data as a result of the data not corresponding to the metadata .
