The present study was carried out to assess the extent of genetic variability among yield and yield related traits in selected kabuli chickpea genotypes. Forty-nine kabuli chickpea genotypes were studied for thirteen traits at Debre Zeit and Akaki using 7x7 simple lattice design in 2018 cropping season. Combined analysis of variance revealed that there was a significant difference among genotypes for all traits studied, indicating the presence of considerable amount of variability among genotypes. High Phenotypic coefficients of variation and moderate genotypic coefficients of variation value were shown for number of pods per plant and number of seeds per plant, respectively, indicating the possibility of genetic improvement in selection of these traits. High broad sense heritability coupled with high genetic advance were obtained for hundred-seed weight (91.88 and 23.81), number of pods per plant (68.07 and 28.13), number of secondary branches (80.92 and 27.80), number of seeds per plant (67.86 and 31.840), grain yield (62.33 and 24.42) and harvest index (75.70 and 28.17), respectively. This indicates that these characters could be improved easily through selection.

CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems
The potential for crop wild relatives (CWR) to contribute to crop improvement is growing due to improvements in information on species and their diversity, advancements in breeding tools, and the growing need for exotic genetic diversity to address compounding agronomic challenges. As wild plants, CWR are subject to a myriad of human caused threats to natural ecosystems, and their representation ex situ is often far from comprehensive. Ex situ conservation of many of these wild plants is also technically challenging, particularly in an environment of insufficient resources. Enhancing conservation, availability, and access to CWR requires a spectrum of action spanning basic and applied research on wild species to inform on-the-ground collecting, ex situ maintenance, and germplasm utilization. The development of effective information channels and productive partnerships between diverse organizations are essential to the success of these actions. Here we report on a spectrum of CWR activities involving broad partnerships, at three levels: a) the collaborative compilation and distribution on over 5 million occurrence data records on the CWR of major food crops, b) the analysis of conservation concerns and genetic resources potential of the CWR of potato, sweetpotato, and pigeonpea, and c) ongoing efforts to map the diversity and conservation concerns for CWR in the USA. Although differing in scales and depth of collaborations, the success of these initiatives are largely due to commonalities in research orientation, e.g., inclusiveness, offering clear incentives for involvement, and service providing to the crop science community.

Durum wheat is the second most important triticum species next to bread wheat. Ethiopia is one of the centers of diversity for durum wheat. The present study was to determine the interrelationship and direct and indirect effects of yield component traits on grain yield of Ethiopian landraces durum wheat for further breeding activities of yield improvement. Out, 97 durum wheat accessions along with 3 improved varieties were evaluated in 10 x 10 simple lattice design during 2018 main cropping season at Mata Sub site of Haro Sabu Agricultural Research Center. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among accessions for all traits. More than 36 of accessions were superior in mean grain yield than the standard checks. Grain yield exhibited positive and significant correlation both at genotypic and phenotypic level with most of the characters such as plant height rp = 0.22, rg = 0.25 , harvest index rp=0.79, rg = 0.78 , biological yield rp = 0.31, rg = 0.30 , number of kernels per spike rp = 0.17, rg = 0.21 , spike length, rp = 0.36, rg = 0.39 , and hectoliter weight kg hl 1 rp = 0.44, rg = 0.45 . The association between yield, and yield related characters through phenotypic genotypic path coefficients revealed that biological yield, spike length, harvest index and plant height exerted highest positive direct effect on grain yield. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a foodstuff that plays a very important role for the world population. In Côte d’Ivoire, its production is estimated at 6.5 million tons after yam. With a view to preserving the genetic diversity of the cassava collection of the National Centre for Agronomic Research, several research projects have been carried out on the characterization (morphological, agronomic) and health status (diseases and pests) of the cassava genetic resources conserved in the station. The present study consisted in analysing the composition and evolution of cassava genetic resources and assessing the incidence of diseases and pests in 727 cassava accessions in the collection of the National Centre for Agronomic Research. After analysis, the collection contained a total of 759 accessions of which 32 had disappeared. Of this total, 603 accessions or 83% of the total were from Côte d’Ivoire, 104 or 14% from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and 20 accessions or 3% from various origins. Referring to time and different agronomic research structures, the cassava collection had 106 accessions from 1953 to 1981 for the Office for Scientific and Technical Research Overseas, 101 accessions from 1982 to 1998 for the Savannah Institute and 520 accessions from 1998 to 2019 for the National Centre for Agronomic Research. It was found that the accessions from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture were more resistant to virus than the accessions from the Côte d’Ivoire farmers’ environment. For mites, the attack was strong with 60% of the accessions.

Debouck 1 ,[object Object],[object Object],The Genetic Resources Unit (GRU) of CIAT was established as such in late 1978, and inherited the bean collections from the breeders. In 1978-79, collections of tropical pastures were progressively passed to the GRU for their conservation and study. With world mandates for Phaseolus beans and lowland tropical forages, the GRU conserves mostly as seed collections 35,898 and 23,140 accessions of these crops, respectively (CIAT, 2008). Because germplasm activities - namely distribution - have been on since 1973 (surely on a formal basis since 1980) to date, some analysis of trends is possible. The signing of an agreement in October 1994 between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and CIAT confirms further the curatorship role of GRU. Since 1995, distribution of germplasm to external users has been systematically done under the acceptance of a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA). In 1995-1996 the first designation to FAO (i.e. the sending of an electronic file about all accessions maintained in-trust by CIAT) took place, with subsequent updates every two years since. As per the last update in 2008, GRU has received bean accessions from 111 countries and has distributed 102,447 samples to 103 countries (Figure 1). A total of 76 countries have provided and received bean accessions, in many cases more than twice (Table 1). As well known, bean gene pools originated in the American tropics. Countries like Guatemala has provided Meso-American accessions, and has introduced more Andean accessions to improve traits such as seed size and disease resistances thanks to complementary alleles found in the other region. Table 1 shows the 30 main providers of bean accessions to CIAT. GRU also has received forage accessions from 72 countries, and has distributed 44,263 samples of forage germplasm to 105 countries. A total of 58 countries have been both providers and recipients (Figure 2). Table 2 shows the 30 main providers of forage germplasm to CIAT. As a general observation, neotropical countries have provided legume germplasm to African countries through CIAT GRU, while African countries have provided grass germplasm to South America again through CIAT GRU. Many countries have provided CIAT GRU with germplasm accessions of beans and forages. The same countries and many more have either received different accessions of beans and forages from CIAT, or have received more materials, or both, thanks to the mechanisms of access and benefit sharing established by the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resource for Food and Agriculture, with which CIAT has an agreement since October 2006. These distribution and related research activities have been supported by grants of CIAT core budget (with contributions of, namely, USAID and the EU), the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources, the Systemwide Programme on Information for Plant Genetic Resources, the Global Crop Diversity Trust, and the Ministerio de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural of Colombia.
