Linking and commenting 
• Linking words 
Linking words in English are words that are used to combine or 
link in one sentence two statements presenting contrast, 
comparison, condition, supposition, purpose, etc. 
• Commenting 
Linguistics, the part of a sentence that provides new information 
about the topic, also called rheme.
Linking words 
Wherever 
My thoughts will be with you wherever you go. 
(No matter where you go, my thoughts will be 
with you.)

 Complete the sentences with the linking and commenting expressions.

Metaphors and idioms • Metaphor: 
A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to 
• Idiom: 
which it is not literally 
applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in 
“A mighty fortress is our God.” 
A speech form or an expression of a given language that is peculiar 
to itself grammatically or cannot be understood from the individual 
meanings of its elements, as in keep tabs on.

• ring a bell If something rings a bell, it 
sounds familiar, but you don't remember 
the exact details. 
Justin Timberlake? The name rings a bell 
but I don't remember him. 
Body (Idioms relating to parts of the body) 
• nose out of joint If something puts your 
nose out of joint, it offends or annoys you. 
When he discovered he wasn't on the 
invitation list, that really put his nose out 
of joint!
