2. CONJUNCIONES
 Conjunctions link two parts of a statement or
link two statements. Common conjunctions
include:
Y/E AND
PERO BUT
O/U OR
PORQUE BECAUSE
AUNQUE ALTHOUGH
COMO AS
CUANDO WHEN
SIN EMBARGO HOWEVER

3. CONJUNCIONES
Y/E AND
And is ‘y’ unless it is followed by a word beginning
with ‘i’ or ‘hi’ (but not hie), in which case it
becomes ‘e’.
Estudio español e inglés
I study Spanish and English
Maria y su hermana
Maria and her sister
Un pueblo antiguo e histórico
A historic and old village

4. CONJUNCIONES
O/U OR
When ‘o’ (or) is followed by a word beginning with
‘o’ or ‘ho’ it changes to ‘u’
Hay habitaciones de cuatro u ocho
There are rooms with four or eight beds
El veinte de agosto o el seis de junio
The 20the August or the 6th June

PERO BUT
The most usual word for ‘but’ is ‘pero’
Voy mañana, pero Ana va hoy
I’m going tomorrow, but Ana is going today
Hace frío pero no me importa
It’s cold but I don’t mind

6. CONJUNCIONES
PERO / SINO BUT
Use ‘sino’ to mean ‘but’ after a negative and when
it suggests a contradiction
No es antiguo sino nuevo
It’s not old but new
No tiene uno, sino dos
He hasn’t got one, but two

PORQUE BECAUSE
Estoy viendo la tele porque está
nevando
I’m watching television because its snowing

COMO AS
Como soy atleta, bebo mucho agua
As I’m an athlete, I drink a lot of agua

CUANDO WHEN
Empecé a ir a la escuela cuando tenía seis
años
I started primary school when I was six years old

SIN EMBARGO HOWEVER
Fuera está lloviendo, sin embargo
es un día soleado
It is raining outside however it’s a sunny day

AUNQUE ALTHOUGH
Me gusta ir al cine aunque puedo ver
las películas en casa
I like going to the cinema although I can see the films at home
