In Aztec mythology, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl were star-crossed lovers. Popocatépetl, a brave warrior, had to defeat their enemies in battle to marry Iztaccíhuatl, a beautiful princess. However, a rival tricked Iztaccíhuatl into believing Popocatépetl had died. Overcome with grief, she died of a broken heart. When Popocatépetl returned and found her dead, his grief was immense. The gods turned them into mountains so they could be together forever, with Popocatépetl watching over Iztaccíhuatl.
