  1. The Andalusian Agency for Health Care Quality , which is a public organization belonging to the Andalusian Ministry of Health. As you may know, the Spanish health system is decentralized, as such there are 17 different health systems that depend on local Ministries. The Andalusian system is one of the biggest of Spain, with more than 100.000 professionals , 29 hospitals and over 1.500 primary health care centers.
  2. The Andalusian Agency for Health Care Quality’s mission is to promote health quality and continuing improvement of health services through the Andalusian Quality Model, assessing the quality of healthcare services with four accreditation programmes: Healthcare Centers and Units Professionals’ competences Continuing education Health websites The Agency also has two observatories, whose mission is to share and disseminate good practices in patient safety and health training. I am the technical manager of web contents development of the Observatory for Quality of Health Training, that was set up in January 2010, to support the Ministry of Health’s training policies, promoting the generation, exchange and circulation of best practices in the health sphere . Its purpose is to offer health care professionals the tools that facilitate the circulation of useful learning resources for the optimum development of their work, such as: didactical resources , successful experiences , and examples of processes and tools to plan, develop and assess learning actions in health.

Observatory for Quality of Health Training developed new spaces for collaborative working and learning of health professionals, to promote an active and collaborative model of learning and encourage shared team-work. The first of them was the Observatory website, a collaborative space where users can contribute to share content about health training and professional development. Before to be published in the website, the content is checked by a team of volunteer according with some pre-established criterias.
  5. Another initiative is GPDI, a web tool designed to elaborate personal development plans for professionals, based on a competencies assessement. This tool allows to design a different competencies map for every health workers and to find out his personal needs of development.
  6. Another initiative is the web tool Evalùa, that allows to manage the assessment of training activities with standard surveys based on quality criterias of the Agency.
  7. But today I am here to speak about the fourth initiative, the ‘Communities of practice for quality and patient safety’ , a website that allow health professionals to create and manage online communities of practice. We set up a specific platform based on the open software ELGG and we offered it to the professionals to develop a continuous online dialogue between them.
  8. The access to the platform is free for every health professional or student, and all users are on the same level. Everyone can create a community of practice and manage its activities, without any permission from the institution, who just provides technical support. We wanted to offer to every professional the opportunity to have a virtual space to connect to others and to learn and practice how to use this kind of tools.
  9. The platform offers different tools, including blogs, forums, chat, micro-blogging, private messages, shared event calendar, shared files managing, links and photos. We use the same channels to contact with the users and to help them using the platform.
  10. Since june 2011, 42 groups were created around topics like: healthcare processes, quality in professional training in healthcare, patient safety, quality systems and management, professional development, process management.

Conclusion : Results about activity of health professionals in the website show their high participation in the platform, proving their interest in this kind of methodology and the usefulness of this tool. Using a virtual space to exchange knowledge is encouraging development of horizontal and no- hierarchical work dynamics between health professionals, who are both learner and trainer in these processes.
  16. Take- home message : Collaborative learning activities allows to generate a continuous and open dialogue about critical elements of work, even in organizational environment and share knowledge that can improve quality of healthcare practice.
