Foreword

T
his list of learning resources identifies additional resources that have been recommended by
the Ministry of Education to support the Grade 6 English Language Arts Curriculum. This list
will be updated as new resources become available.
There is no single resource that provides support for all the outcomes in a grade-specific English
language arts curriculum. When purchasing resources from this list, it is advisable to select a
variety of resources so all three goals of English Language Arts will be supported. Other resources
beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the Grade 6 English Language Arts
Curriculum. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best
meet the needs of their school or community. These resources should be chosen in accordance
with the school division’s learning resources selection policy.
Pricing of the learning resources contained in this document is subject to change without notice
by the publishers and/or distributors.
The abbreviation (CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the
resource or that it includes Canadian content. Similarly, (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person
contributed to the development of the resource, or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (WNCP)
indicates that the resource was selected through the evaluation processes of the Western and
Northern Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education.
The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who
have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions
made by educators who served as evaluators.

understand how we are influenced by text.
Part two includes examples of critical literacy
by focusing on challenging the text, exploring
identities, and seeing beyond biases. The book
encourages the reader to think about multiple
perspectives or voices, question, problem
solve, and make connections between the text
and the world.
Note: American references are used as
examples – teachers will need to adapt the
ideas to meet the curriculum.

focuses on an individual Canadian athlete
and how he or she became a Canadian hero.
The author introduces each sport played in
the summer and winter events, as well as
the various team and demonstration sports.
The text has humourous anecdotes and
photographs of the Olympic and Special
Olympic athletes and teams. Special mention
is made of the fact that the World Special
Olympic Games was the largest sporting event
in the world in 1995. This collection of essays
shows the courage, dedication, perseverance,
achievements, and losses of the Olympians.

I Read It, But I Don’t Get It is organized into
three parts. Parts 1 and 2 contain chapters Copyright: 2003
that pertain to topics such as ”Fake Reading“, Year Recommended: 2006
”Connecting the New to the Known“, and
”What’s the Plan?“ Each chapter begins with
a student quote and an anecdote involving a
problem in reading encountered by the author
in an actual classroom of adolescent students.
The strategies presented in the book are based
on research that defines the thinking strategies
used by proficient readers. The roles of purpose
in reading, motivation, and use of prior
experiences constitute the basis for many of
the strategies. The book is in line with current
ideas regarding effective reading instruction.
The notion that meaning in reading is
constructed as readers interact with text is
at the root of the strategies presented. Part 3
consists of three short appendices that contain
forms to be used to facilitate implementation
of the strategies presented in the preceding
chapters.

weeks alone in an iglu. Use of the term
”Eskimo“ would also require explanation.
The book includes an Inuit glossary and a

The final book in the Island Trilogy wraps up
the adventure and solves the mystery related
to other visitors to the island. In order to save
themselves, the stranded teens must draw
upon personal and group resources to outwit
the outlaws. Each of them must also face and
accept that rescue may never happen. The
addition of a historical element adds an extra
dimension to the suspense and may motivate
students to do further research.

city of Halifax does not see these strengths in
the community. It sees only the dilapidated
houses, the lack of plumbing, and the crowded
conditions. It becomes obvious that the city is
going to destroy Africville, and that the tight-
knit community will be scattered.
One strength of this novel is its portrayal
of the effects of discrimination – the daily
humiliations, the lack of opportunity, and the
sense of powerlessness.

strategies for bringing students and books
together. Part Four features response guides
for students’ non-fiction texts, as well as
an annotated bibliography. Also included
is a bibliography of cited children’s books.
Although most works cited in this resource are

  • 7. English Language Arts: Additional Learning Resources • Grade 6 Foreword T his list of learning resources identifies additional resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support the Grade 6 English Language Arts Curriculum. This list will be updated as new resources become available. There is no single resource that provides support for all the outcomes in a grade-specific English language arts curriculum. When purchasing resources from this list, it is advisable to select a variety of resources so all three goals of English Language Arts will be supported. Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the Grade 6 English Language Arts Curriculum. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their school or community. These resources should be chosen in accordance with the school division’s learning resources selection policy. Pricing of the learning resources contained in this document is subject to change without notice by the publishers and/or distributors. The abbreviation (CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource or that it includes Canadian content. Similarly, (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource, or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (WNCP) indicates that the resource was selected through the evaluation processes of the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education. The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators.
