The document discusses why obtaining a permaculture design certificate goes beyond just gardening techniques. It explains that permaculture is about empowerment, ecology, and making the most of resources through observation and design. The core ideas of permaculture include seeing how energy and resources flow through systems of gardens, homes, machines used, and resource collection, with the goal of producing more efficient, self-sufficient, and ecological solutions.
3. We need to
produce our
own food so
that we can
be:
IT’S ABOUT
EMPOWERMENT AND ECOLOGY
4. More efficient:
having food on hand
More self-sufficient:
we don’t need to super market
More ecological:
things don’t need to be packaged and shipped
9. Gardens
How our homes are built
The way our machines are used
The way our resources are collected
(wind, water, solar, natural gas, oil)

Many people arrive at Permaculture because they want to grow their own food, so it’s a great entry point, but what then?
It’s a tool kit. It’s a way of speaking with the planet. It’s really about looking and observing nature’s way and masterfully designing to match the needs of the earth and your needs.
If the world lived like Americans live---we would need 3-4 planet earths.
Permaculture seeks to minimize the impact of the energy we use, while maximizing the output of the resources required for it.
Catching storing and utilizing rain water, repurposing grey water, means we don’t take from our current water sources or flush good water down into the sewer.
First you observe--- especially nature, which has spent millenia perfecting its systems toward sustainability.
Then design something in a similar fashion that works well for both people and the earth.
Gardens become diverse food forests instead of monocropped fields. Communities become diverse. There are with cooperative gardens, stores, not decorative lawns. They are energy efficient and nature enhancing,
It helps you organize your thoughts/life into ways that aren’t random and chaotic. It’s the method in your maddness.
