2. MONASTERIO DE SANTA CLARA
• Situado en Tordesillas, provincia de Valladolid, en Castilla - León, a
orillas del río Duero y a 704 m. de altura. Esta ciudad fue corte de reyes
en la Edad Media y prisión de la Reina Juana de Castilla, llamada La Loca,
hija de los Reyes Católicos y madre del emperador Carlos V. Lugar en el
que fue firmado, en 1494, el famoso tratado entre Castilla y Portugal,
por el que se repartían los territorios descubiertos en el Nuevo Mundo.
• The monastery, placed in Tordesillas, in Valladolid, Castille- León,
located along the Douro River and at an elevation of 704 m. This town
was favored by the royal family and noblemen during the Middles Ages.
It was the prison of Queen Joanna of Castille and Aragon, daughter of
Isabella I of Castille and Ferdinand II of Aragon, and mother of the
emperor Charles V. Here the Catholic Monarchs signed the famous
Treaty of Tordesillas, in 1494, with the Portuguese crown, stablishing
the line dividing the new discovered world.
4. EL MONASTERIO
• Alfonso XI de Castilla mandó construir un palacio al estilo mudéjar en 1340,
que recuerda al alcázar de Sevilla, y a las mezquitas de Córdoba y Toledo. En
1363,Pedro I el Cruel y sus hijas Beatriz e Isabel fundaron en el palacio un
convento de clarisas. En 1373 empieza la construcción de la iglesia. Felipe el
Hermoso de Borgoña, fallecido en 1509, esposo de Juana I de Castilla, fue
enterrado en la capilla de los Saldaña, hasta que su hijo, el emperador Carlos
V, ordenó su traslado a Granada, a la muerte de Doña Juana en 1555.
• Alfonso XI of Castille buit a mudéjar palace in 1340, reminding the Alcázar of
Seville and the mosques of Córdoba or Toledo. In 1363 Peter I, the Cruel and
his daughters Beatriz and Isabel founded a convent for Poor Clares in this
palace. The church was begun in 1373. Philip the Fair, dead in 1509,
husband of Queen Joanna I of Castille, was buried in the crypt of the
Saldañas chapel, until his son, Emperor Charles V, ordered to move him to
Granada when Joanna died in 1555.

49. La Iglesia/ The church
• Construida en el s. XV, en estilo gótico, con una sola nave y bóvedas de crucería.
El presbiterio está cubierto con una armadura mudéjar. En la parte posterior,
destaca el coro de las monjas, separado con una reja. En un lateral, destaca la
capilla funeraria del contador de Juan II, Fernán López de Saldaña, hecha en
piedra con arcos apuntados ricamente decorados. En la cripta estuvieron
enterrados Felipe el Hermoso y la reina Doña Juana, hasta su traslado a
Granada. Destaca el retablo, con esculturas flamencas y pinturas de Nicolás
Francés.
• The church was built in the 15th century, in Gothic style, with only one nave and
ribbed vaults. The presbitery is covered with a Mudéjar coffered ceiling.
Backwards, we can see the choir of the nuns, separated from the church by a
carved railing. On one side, there is the funeral chapel of Fernán López de
Saldaña, counter of John II of Castille, made of stone, with pointed flamboyant
rich archs. Philip the Fairy and Queen Joanna were buried in the crypt until they
were taken to Granada. The most important is the altarpiece with Flemich
sculptures and paintings by Nicolás Francés.
