Kia Ora, Talofa and Welcome to the 2015 School Year.
It was just so great to see all our students return with approximately 85% wearing the new school uniform. It
looked so impressive on the first day We have been advised by the supplier of the uniforms, that they were
so inundated with people purchasing, that they are sorry that they ran out of some sizes and items. Any back
orders should be here very soon.
We welcome our new teachers: Miss Anita Cunningham (Miss C - Room Awarua); Miss Lyn Cunningham
(Room Oreti); Miss Katie Harris (Room Waituna) and Mrs Noelene Marshall (Room Mataura - Job Sharing
with Mrs Maheno who is undertaking reading recovery training).
Welcome to our new families, who started for the first time at Tisbury School. It can be daunting getting to
know how things run - to help with this, your child has a home school communication book which are all up
and running as from today. In this book you will find the 2015 Information Booklet, Behaviour Guidelines,
Helpful Medical Chart plus two medical forms that you are to fill out and return to the office if you wish the
school to administer medication - no form no medication. If there is something in the booklet you are not
sure of, please contact the office or your child’s Teacher.
Today parents have had an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and hear a little about their programme
and timetables. This is not the only time, you are welcome to visit the classroom before school and after
school without an appointment. If there is something specific you wish to discuss we do ask that you make a
set time after school - this ensures your privacy and full attention of the teacher.
School Stationery - again, thanks to the 95% of families who have purchased the stationery so quickly, it
means that we can start working straight away. As a school we do appreciate that this is an expensive time
of year.
Car Park - for any new parents to school - our car park can get very congested from 2:30 until 3:00ish.
Therefore, please park across the road in the playing field and walk across to collect your child. In addition,
please leave the first three parks for our Out of School Providers who have vans and collect up to 6+ children
a day. Even if you are in a hurry - it is just as quick to park and collect your child and then return, rather
than sit and wait in the wrong spot - also students are not allowed to leave the grounds (ie walk out of the
gate) unless they have an adult with them for safety.
Some Different Ways of Doing Things:
Meet and Greet - 8:45 to 9:00am: all students come together in the library to sing songs, hear school mes-
sages and where staff can focus on reinforcing positive behaviour and the school values.
It is about creating “a family” feel. The end of week assembly, for celebrating child’s work and successes, is
on a Friday at 11:30 (all parents are welcome). Assembly at this time also allows staff to feed into “Friday
Fun Time”. This is when students can have an extra 20 minutes play. All they need to do is be organised for
learning, and have their vest and communication book at school daily. (Check out the information booklet for
how it works.)
Gate Duty - in the morning some of you may have seen two senior students recording names of students
who are late for school. School starts at 8:45am - and legally we are required to acknowledge students who
arrive after that time as late. Now that the whole school Meet and Greet at 8:45am anyone arriving after that
bell will be recorded as being late on the school’s roll. If you are consistently late, (you will get a letter about
it) the School may need to contact the Attendance Service.
Coming up very fast will be the first event of the Southern Zone School’s Group
ATHLETICS - Monday, 2 March (postponement date Wednesday 4th March)
Staff have already started practices (well one or two due to weather this week).
For our new families, the whole school (5 year olds to the seniors) all meet at Surrey Park Athletics Park
(right beside Stadium Southland) at 8:30am (no bus transport as staff are responsible for all the running
events over the next 6 years, and need to be on deck at 8:00am to organise the 800m plus relays). This is
the first of a few notices to make you aware that athletics is coming up fast - some students may want to
practice their special event at home (run round the block).
Staff will need parent help with the organising the Running - please think about being able to help - we will
require time keepers, recorders and parents to organise and follow our students around all the other events.
Watch out for more information coming soon.
The staff and I look forward to an exciting school year. I have set myself the challenge of writing something
on the school’s blog each week - and putting important information on the school’s facebook (now that will be
the real challenge).

Basic Principal of
Good Parenting:
Adapt your parenting
to fit your child.
Make sure your parent-
ing keeps pace with
your child’s develop-
ment. You may wish
you could slow down or
freeze-frame your
child’s life, but this
is the last thing he
wants. You may be
fighting getting old-
er, but all he wants
is to grow up. The
same drive for inde-
pendence that is mak-
ing your three-year–
old say “no” all the
time is what’s moti-
vating him to be toi-
let trained. The same
intellectual growth
spurt that is making
your 13 year old curi-
ous and inquisitive in
the classroom also is
making her argumenta-
tive at the dinner
table.
