Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Al preguntar para qué sirve la lectura se aceptaron hasta dos respuestas por cada entrevistado. To-
mando en cuenta la primera mención, tres cuartes partes asocian la lectura con el aprendizaje y uno
de cada 10 con ser culto (11.9%), mientras que divertirse alcanzó 5.4%. Al considerar ambas respues-
tas, divertirse se incrementó a 21.4%, mejorar en el trabajo a 13.6% y ser culto alcanzó 39.4%.

como varias relacionadas con aprendizaje y conocimiento: aprender (9.1%), conocimiento (8.1%),

4.3 Lugar que ocupa la lectura en el uso del tiempo libre
El primer lugar entre las respuestas acerca del uso del tiempo libre lo ocupó ver televisión, con una propor-
ción de cuatro de cada 10 entrevistados (41.1%), seguido de descansar (29.2%), reunirse con amigos y
familiares (21.7%), escuchar música (20.6%), practicar algún deporte (15.7%) e ir al cine (13.1%).

Leer libros recibe 12.5% de las respuestas, leer revistas 4.7% y leer periódicos 4.6%. Conjuntamente,
estas tres actividades de lectura representan 19.8% de las respuestas, es decir, cerca de una quinta
parte, por debajo de escuchar música y por encima de practicar algún deporte.
Perfil sociodemográfico de uso del tiempo libre
Por sexo
Las diferencias entre hombres y mujeres en uso del tiempo libre no son muy marcadas en la mayor
parte de las actividades que ocuparon los primeros lugares de respuesta. Ver televisión es declarado
por una proporción ligeramente superior de mujeres (43.6%) que de hombres (38.1%). Leer libros,
periódicos y revistas tiene también un porcentaje ligeramente mayor de menciones entre las mu-
jeres (21.4%) que entre los hombres (17.8%). En practicar deporte las diferencias son significativas:
23.6% para los hombres y 9.1% para las mujeres.
Por edad
Las diferencias por edad en uso del tiempo libre son bastante marcadas. Ver televisión recibe el por-
centaje más alto de las respuestas entre los jóvenes de 12 a 17 años (47.7%) y los mayores de 55 años
(43.2%). Los jóvenes de 18 a 22 años son el grupo de edad con el porcentaje más bajo de mención
de ver televisión (32.1%).
Descansar tiene el más alto índice de respuestas entre los de más de 55 años (39.0%) y decrece con-
forme la edad disminuye. Tanto escuchar música como practicar un deporte reciben los porcentajes más
altos de respuestas entre los grupos de menos de 22 años y descienden conforme la edad aumenta.
Leer libros, periódicos y revistas tiene la más alta proporción de respuestas en el grupo de 46 a 55
años (34.3%), seguido de los jóvenes de 18 a 22 años (25.7%), en tanto que la proporción más baja
se da entre los jóvenes de 12 a 17 años.
Por escolaridad
Ver televisión y descansar reciben la más alta proporción de respuestas para el grupo de ninguna es-
colaridad y disminuyen conforme el nivel de escolaridad es más alto. Leer libros, periódicos y revistas
es mencionado por cuatro de cada 10 entrevistados con educación universitaria (40.2%), el doble del
promedio nacional, en tanto que es sensiblemente inferior en el resto de los niveles de escolaridad.
Por nivel socioeconómico
Ver televisión y descansar también reciben la más alta proporción de menciones para el grupo socio-
económico más bajo y disminuyen conforme se eleva el nivel socioeconómico. Leer libros, revistas y
periódicos recibe el porcentaje más alto de respuestas entre los entrevistados de niveles socioeconómi-
cos medio alto y alto (37.5%) y medio (30.5%), con cifras muy inferiores para el resto de los grupos,
descendiendo conforme el nivel socioeconómico es menor.

Perfil territorial del uso del tiempo libre
Por región
Los porcentajes más altos de ver televisión son reportados por los entrevistados del centro-occidente
(56.8%) y del noreste (49.0%); el porcentaje más bajo se reporta en el Distrito Federal (29.0%). El
mayor porcentaje de respuestas de lectura se da en el Distrito Federal (29.3%) y el centro (26.2%),
en tanto que los porcentajes más bajos se dan en el centro-occidente (13.1%) y el sur (15.8%).
Por estrato de población
Los mayores porcentajes de ver televisión se dan en los municipios de menos de 2 500 habitantes
(54.8%) y de 100 mil a 500 mil habitantes (52.3%). La mayor proporción de lectura de libros, revistas
y periódicos se da en los municipios de más de 500 mil habitantes.
Por ciudad
Guadalajara y Monterrey reportan menciones de ver televisión ligeramente superiores a la media
nacional; en tanto que descansar es mencionado en la zona metropolitana de la ciudad de México
por una proporción sensiblemente inferior al promedio nacional. Leer recibe una mayor proporción
de respuestas en la zona metropolitana de la ciudad de México (38.8%) y en Guadalajara (28.6%),
mientras que Monterrey recibe los más altos índices de ir al cine (30.3%).

Usos de los medios de comunicación
El comparativo de para qué sirven más los diferentes medios de comunicación muestra a la televisión
como un medio que se percibe principalmente de entretenimiento (74.1%), seguido del radio (52.1%),
el internet (23.3%) y leer periódicos (13.5%). Por lo que hace a informarse, el mayor peso lo tienen los
periódicos (81.6%), seguido de oír radio (44.0%), usar internet (24.1%) y ver televisión (21.3%).
Finalmente, como un medio para aprender, sólo el uso del internet recibe una proporción significativa
de respuestas, con 29.4%.

4.4 Lectura y confianza en las instituciones sociales
Con el propósito de analizar qué tanto incide la lectura en el grado de confianza de los entrevistados
en diversas instituciones sociales, se realizó una comparación entre los valores reportados por lecto-
res frecuentes de libros (seis o más al año) y de periódicos (diario o varias veces a la semana) y los va-
lores promedio del total de la población. Al hacer el cruce no se detectaron variaciones significativas
entre los tres valores.
