This document summarizes odd fashion trends for males in history, including wigs from the 16th century due to hair loss and lice, corsets in the Victorian era to achieve a slimmer waist and broader shoulders, stuffing calf muscles in the 16th century to emulate Henry VIII's legs, and trunk hose between the mid-16th to early 17th centuries that were slashed and poufed. Additional trends mentioned are cravats originating from Croatian military wear in the early 17th century, ruffs to keep the neckline clean in the mid-16th to mid-17th century, and high heels from pattens in the Middle Ages for riding and keeping clothing clean until the French Revolution.
The Assumption of the Virgin altarpiece by Egid Quirin Asam located in the Kloster Rohr monastery church in Rohr, Germany from 1723 was inspired by Baroque architecture in Rome, specifically Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. It uses different textures like gold, cloth, and stone to create an illusionistic, theatrical setting representing the heavens and Mary's ascension with angels. Through borrowing techniques from ornate Baroque theater like staged backdrops, Asam aimed to magically transport viewers to the depicted holy scene within the church.
Women began wearing pants in the late 19th century for bicycling due to the practicality of pants over skirts or dresses. Pants were initially large and baggy for bicycling but were later adopted for other physical activities like farming, sports, and during World War II when women took over men's jobs. Throughout the early 20th century, women gradually integrated pants into more casual settings through items like panties, pajamas, and evening wear before pants became common daywear in the 1960s and 1970s as attitudes toward women's fashion evolved.
Leonardo Da Vinci was known as a painter during his time, but his sketchbooks revealed that he also made detailed sketches of anatomy, nature, engineering, and science. Through his sketches, he documented his interests in water movement, human anatomy, and engineering designs, experiments, and ideas, especially related to weaponry and reinventing old inventions. His sketchbooks provided new knowledge in multiple fields and showed that his scientific interests extended beyond painting.
Cubism was an early 20th century avant-garde art movement that originated in Paris around 1908 led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Cubism involved depicting subjects from multiple viewpoints to represent three-dimensional forms in a two-dimensional medium through the use of geometric shapes and planes. Notable Cubist works included Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and Braque's Bottle, Newspaper, Pipe and Glass (1913). Cubism rejected naturalistic depiction and influenced many subsequent art movements.
This document discusses several Rococo paintings and the artists that created them. It contrasts the styles of Rubenisme and Poussinisme, with Watteau embracing Rubenisme's emphasis on color and movement. Key paintings mentioned include Watteau's Return From Cythera, Boucher's Cupid a Captive which took after Watteau's style, and Fragonard's The Swing which depicted a sensual scene. Chardin's Grace at Table is also summarized as depicting ordinary scenes with simplicity and light/dark contrasts.
The document summarizes the history and use of concrete by ancient civilizations like the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Egyptians. It then focuses on how the Romans advanced the use of concrete in their architecture by developing new techniques like arches, vaults, and domes. They used concrete for many of their iconic structures like aqueducts, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon.
Gothic ribbed vaults allowed for taller and lighter cathedral architecture than previous Romanesque styles. Gothic cathedrals used pointed arches rather than semicircular Romanesque arches, enabling vaults to be taller and admit more light through large windows while maintaining structural integrity with reinforcing ribs. The goals of Gothic architecture were to bring in exterior light, create an airy and lofty interior feel, and have an uninterrupted nave reaching towards the heavens.
Neoclassical Architecture Compared to Greek and Roman Architecturemepier01
Neoclassical architecture drew inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman styles during the 18th and 19th centuries. Prominent figures went on the Grand Tour of Europe and were exposed to classical ruins, fueling interest in Greek and Roman architectural forms. During times of political upheaval, neoclassical styles represented ideals of democracy, virtue, and civilized society. The architecture served as a vehicle for political rulers to consolidate authority through its public, authoritative presence that appealed to different political philosophies of the time.
