2. Once there was a tree . . .Había vez un árbol…

3. and she loved a little boy.Que amaba a un niño.

4. And every day
the boy
would come
Y cada día, el niño
venia a jugar con
el árbol.

5. and he would
gather her leaves
Y el, juntaba las
hojas.

6. And make them into crowns
and play king of the forest
.
Tejía una corona, y
jugaba a ser el Rey del
bosque.

7. He would climb up her trunkTrepaba a su tronco.

8. and swing from her branchesSe columpiaba en sus ramas.

9. and eat apples.Y comía sus manzanas.

10. And they would play
hide and go seek
.
Y también, jugaban a
las escondidas.

11. And when he was tired,
he would sleep
in her shade.

Y cuando se sentía
cansado, el dormía bajo
su sombra.

12. And the boy loved the tree . . .El niño, llego a amar,
mucho a este árbol.

13. very much. . .
And the tree was happy.
Y el árbol, se sentía
feliz.

14. But time went by.Pero el tiempo paso.

15. And the boy grew older.Y el niño creció.

16. Y el árbol, fue quedando solo.

17. Then one day the boy
came to the tree
and the tree said :
“Come, Boy, come and
climb up my trunk
and swing from
my branches
and eat apples and
play in my shade
and be happy.”
Un día el joven
regresó y el árbol le
dijo:
“Ven muchacho,
ven y trepa a mi
tronco y cuélgate
en mis ramas y
come mis frutas y
juega en la sombra
y se feliz”.

18. “I am too big to
climb and play,”
said the boy.
“I want to buy things
and have fun.
I want some money.
Can you give me
some money?”
“Estoy muy grande
para trepar y jugar”,
dijo el joven.
“Quiero comprar
cosas y divertirme.
Quiero algo de
dinero, ¿puedes
darme dinero?”.

19. “I’m sorry,”
said the tree,
“but I have no money.
I have only leaves
and apples.
Take my apples, Boy,
and sell them in the city.
Then you will
have money
and you will be happy.”
“Lo siento”, dijo el árbol,
“no tengo dinero, solo
hojas y frutas”.
Toma mis frutas y
véndelas.
Así podrás tener dinero y
ser feliz”.

20. And so the boy climbed up the tree
and gathered her apples
and carried them away.
And the tree was happy . . .
El joven trepó al árbol y recogió
las frutas y se las llevó.
Y el árbol se sintió feliz.

21. But the boy stayed away for long time . . .
and the tree was sad.
And then one day
the boy came back
and the tree shock
with joy and she said,
“Come, Boy, climb up
my trunk and swing
from my branches
and be happy.”
Pasó largo tiempo sin venir y el
árbol estaba triste.
Pero… un día regresó y el árbol se
sacudió de gozo y exclamó,
“Ven muchacho, trepa a mi
tronco, cuélgate en mis ramas y
se feliz”.

22. “I am too busy to climb trees,”
said the boy.
“I want a house to keep me warm,”
he said.
“I want a wife and I want children,
and so I need a house.
Can you give me a house?”
“Estoy demasiado ocupado para
trepar al árbol.
Yo quiero tener una casa donde
vivir, una esposa e hijos.
¿Puedes darme una casa?”.

23. “I have no house,” said the tree.
“The forest is my house,
but you may cut off my branches
and build a house.
Then you will be happy.”
“No tengo casa”, replicó el
árbol, “el bosque es mi casa,
pero tu puedes cortar mis
ramas y construir una casa y
ser feliz”.

24. And so the boy cut off her branches
and carried them away to build his house.
Así que el joven cortó las ramas y se las
llevó para construir su casa.

25. Y el árbol se sintió feliz.. . .

26. But the boy stayed away
for a long time.
And when he came back,
the tree was so happy
she could hardly speak.
“Come, Boy,” she whispered,
“come and play.”
“I am too old and sad to play,”
said the boy.
“I want a boat that will
Take me far away from here.
Can you give me a boat?”
“Cut down my trunk and make
a boat,” said the tree.
“Than you can sail away…
and be happy.”
El muchacho pasó mucho
tiempo sin volver.
Y cuando lo hizo el árbol fue
tan feliz que casi no pudo
hablar!. “Ven, susurró, ven y
juega”.
“Estoy tan anciano y triste
para jugar”, dijo el hombre.
“Quiero un bote que me
lleve muy lejos de aquí.
¿Puedes darme un bote?”.
“Corta mi tronco y hazte
uno”, le contestó. “Luego
podrás navegar lejos y ser
feliz”.

27. Y asi, este hombre corto el tronco
Y fabrico un bote, para poder naveg

28. And the tree was happy . . . but not reallyY el árbol se sintió feliz.

29. Pasando mucho tiempo, el hombre regresó
otra vez más. El árbol le dijo, “cuanto lo
siento muchacho, pero no tengo nada
para darte, mis frutos se han ido”.
Y el que había sido niño y joven le
contestó: “Sabes, mis dientes están
muy débiles y flojos para comer
fruta”.
El árbol habló nuevamente:
“Mis ramas se han ido y no
puedes columpiarte en
ellas”. Y él le contestó,
“estoy demasiado viejo
para columpiarme en tus
ramas”.

30. Mira, mi tronco se ha ido, ya no puedes
trepar en él”, a lo que el hombre le contesto,
“estoy demasiado viejo para trepar”.
Suspirando el árbol añadió,
“desearía poder darte algo más,
pero nada me queda, soy solo un
viejo palo. Cuánto lo siento”.
“No necesito mucho más ahora”,
dijo bajito el hombre. “Solo un lugar
tranquilo para sentarme y
descansar. Estoy muy cansado”.
“Bien”, dijo el palo, estirándose lo
más que pudo. “Un viejo tronco es
bueno para sentarse y descansar.
Ven muchacho, siéntate y
descansa”.

31. Y el árbol se sintió feliz. . . .
