CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE:
An Indian Perspective
CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE: An Indian Perspective is one of the few traveling exhibitions on contemporary architecture in India featuring especially the late 20th and early 21st century architecture. The exhibition is aimed at to document and portray some of the latest additions to the vast treasure of modern building designs in the country. Most of the projects included in it have been unearthed and shown for the first time. What makes the exhibition special is that it includes a variety of projects which are:
• Located in the remote rural settings to the metropolitan cities.
• Smallest to the biggest in size and scale.
• Designed for different climate zones.
• Designed for various cultures and types of people.
• Incorporate various construction techniques and materials.
• Fulfill various functions.
The SOS Children's Village in Aqaba, Jordan houses about 100 orphaned children in eight family homes. The village was designed around a central square and includes additional buildings like an administration building, kindergarten, and service center. Traditional local materials like stone and wood were used and the design incorporated passive cooling techniques like shading and ventilation to suit the hot, arid climate. While the village provided a warm environment for the children, the wind catchers brought in dust and had to be closed often. Overall, the architecture successfully revived regional styles sensitively adapted for the local conditions.

The Hearst Tower in New York City was designed by Norman Foster and completed in 2006. It rises 46 floors from the preserved 1928 Art Deco building that formerly housed Hearst offices. The tower uses a diagonal bracing system that eliminates the need for interior columns and allows free floor plans. It was the first skyscraper in NYC to receive gold certification for sustainable design, through features like rainwater recycling, efficient energy systems, and use of recycled materials.
This document provides historical information about Worli BDD Chawls in Mumbai, India. It describes how the chawls were originally built in the 1920s-1924 by the British Development Department to house workers for local mills. It notes that the chawls consisted of one room apartments made of black stone and were originally used as prison buildings. The document also discusses the evolution of chawls in Mumbai to house immigrants in the late 19th century, and provides details about the typical layout of a BDD building, including shared facilities.

This document provides an overview of a thesis project proposing a "Vertical Neighborhood" typology to address issues of urban sprawl and land scarcity. The project aims to reinvent the idea of a neighborhood by incorporating all necessary functions like residential, commercial, educational and community spaces vertically in a single skyscraper building. Located on a 29-acre site in Mumbai, the proposal seeks to demonstrate how functions traditionally separated on the ground can be integrated vertically through smart planning. While residential units will be designed in detail, other spaces will only be allotted positions without structural or thermal analysis due to the large scale of the project.
Bridgepoint Active Healthcare is a 404-bed rehabilitation and complex care hospital in Toronto, Canada. It underwent a $200 million redevelopment from 2003-2013 that resulted in a new 10-story building connected to the historic Don Jail. The redevelopment aimed to blur boundaries between institutional and public spaces and provide an inspirational setting for patient recovery through abundant natural light, views of nature, and indoor and outdoor social spaces.
Vancouver is a coastal city in western Canada located in British Columbia. It was named after British explorer George Vancouver and was originally inhabited by Douglas fir forests. Logging and sawmills established the city's initial economy in the 1800s. Vancouver has since grown to become a major port and center for trade between Asia, Eastern Canada, and Europe. It is a culturally and ethnically diverse city that was home to the 2010 Winter Olympics and is known for its film festival, art gallery, and hockey team.
Chandigarh was one of India's first planned cities after independence and was designed by Le Corbusier. It was planned on a grid pattern with sectors for residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Key features included open green spaces between sectors, a capitol complex with symbolic buildings, and a central business district. While pioneering in its modern design, Chandigarh now faces issues from uncontrolled growth, loss of green spaces, and a lack of local culture and street life.
