1. HISTORY OF ROATAN
Roatan is an island in the Caribbean Sea, about 65 kilometres off the northern coast
of Honduras. It is located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, and is the
largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras.
The frist occupants of the Bay Islands were Pech People, the Maya and the Lenca
tribes. Cristobal Colón came to the Islands on his fourth voyage (1502–1504)- Soon
after the Spanish, pirates, traders and Sea travellers frequently stopped over at
Roatán and the other islands as resting points, but many of them taked the natives
as slave, mainly the spanish.
English, French and Dutch pirates settled on the islands and they often assaulted
the cargo ships that transported gold and silver from the New World to Spain.
For a brief period in the 1850s, Britain declared the Bay Islands its colony. after a
decade, the Crown formally ceded territory to Honduras.
At present, Roatan is composed of people of black, English and mestizo descent,
with a small number of people of indigenous descent. The official language is
Spanish, but the majority of the population is multilibilingual, speaking Spanish and
a variety of English.
The island of Roatán is populated by 10%, the remaining 90% is a jungle area.
The main city of Bay Islands is Roatán and additionally it is the departmental capital.
The New York Times distinguished Roatan with 30th place out of the 53 best places
to visit in the world.
The most important towns are: Puerto Francés, West End, West Bay, Punta Gorda
and José Santos Guardiola.
Roatan has the second largest Barrier of reef in the world! That makes the one of
the places with more foreign tourism in Honduras.

Roatan es una isla en el Mar Caribe, a unos 65 kilómetros de la costa norte de
Honduras. Se encuentra entre las islas de Útila y Guanaja, y es la más grande
de las Islas de la Bahía de Honduras.
Los primeros ocupantes de las Islas de la Bahía fueron los pueblos Pech, los
mayas y las tribus lencas. Cristóbal Colón llegó a las islas en su cuarto viaje
(1502–1504) - Poco después de que los españoles, piratas, comerciantes y
viajeros del mar se detuvieran con frecuencia en Roatán y las otras islas como
lugares de descanso, pero muchos de ellos tomaron a los nativos como esclavos.
