Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

UNIDAD DIDÁCTICA. MÓDULO 2 LA PRENSA. ¨Artes alternativas: El grafiti como medio didáctico y de comunicación social ¨
El autor , Gregorio Gómez Otero,profesor de Educación Artística I.E.S.Iturralde(Madrid).
Soy profesor de Educación Artística en el I.E.S. Iturralde (Madrid) y como asignatura que enseño Imagen y Comunicación de 2º E:S.O., planteé a los alumnos de esta materia, este tema del grafiti, por la gran motivación que tiene entre los alumnos.
Trabajando como profesor en Brasil ,en la Universidad Federal de Bahia de Salvador de Bahía(Brasil), constaté con otros profesores como introducían los alumnos los grafitis de gran calidad en barrios como Liberdade, muy conflictivos socialmente . Los profesores les animaban a sus alumnos a expresarse para conducirles a su propia autoestima y valoración , con los trabajos hechos en simples papeles que después decoraban estéticamente las paredes de las Escuelas y medianerías del barrio: una buena ocasión para ellos que a mi también me motivó como profesor, para introducirlo en la didáctica del ¨curriculum invisible¨ del centro en el que ahora estoy como profesor. Este ¨curriculum invisible¨ es decir es aquel que pasa desapercibido para los profesores y muchos alumnos e incluso a veces también a los profesores relacionados con las artes plásticas como asignatura e incluso como asignatura relacionada e interdisciplinar con otras(Historia del Arte y Matemáticas por decir algunas que mas conocemos).Hay que hacer notar la potencia político-social de grafiteros como Banksy y en España la obra del recientemente fallecido Gol.Ya se realizan festivales de grafiti como el de Aránjuez y se anima a los grafiteros a decorar las tiendas y camiones de una manera legal e incluso pagada
Por tanto, este ¨currículum¨ es olvidado y muchas veces perseguido dentro y fuera de las aulas es el de las artes alternativas urbanas como el ¨tuning¨, los tatuajes, percings etc… y entre ellas el grafiti y otras intervenciones sobre el espacio de la ciudad son utilizados como medios de comunicación aplicados a un medio de expresión de los jóvenes. A través de este quieren ¨dejarse ver¨ respecto de sus problemas y su estética peculiar, dentro de las ciudades y en sus lugares habituales de uso público. Se plantea la posibilidad de una concienciación que posibilite una terapéutica sociabilizada de los recursos que los alumnos pueden hacer uso tanto a nivel de información como de las posibilidades de su participación a la hora de realizar estas obras urbanas.
OBJETIVOS:
-Relacionar los medios de comunicación con las artes alternativas.
-Aplicar las nuevas tecnologías a la realización plena del alumno de secundaria sin marginar a alumnos de educación especial.
- Aprovechar el alumno sus posibilidades a la hora de comunicarse de forma libre y constructiva a través de los medios audiovisuales y artes alternativas.
OTRA VISIÖN DEL CURRICULUM Y SUS CONTENIDOS:
-La utilización de los medios de comunicación y la utilización del arte como medio de socialización y como ayuda ante las dificultades a la hora de expresarse en relación con los Problemas Sociales(Droga, desempleo, etc….) de forma que el alumno vea de forma crítica la posibilidad de soluciones por medio del uso de los lenguajes artístico-gráficos alternativos . De esta forma se incentiva a que los alumnos se integren en Grupos de Expresión organizados por ellos mismos.Así el grafiti y el arte urbano son cauces para que el alumno se encuentre comprendido y aceptado por la sociedad, en vez de ser rechazado sistemáticamente:Romper con la dicotomía: ARTE(oficial)/GRAFITI(Popular).

ACTIVIDADES:
1º-Introducción/Documentación :Explicación previa en clase a todos los alumnos de la temática de la actividad ,así como su inclusión dentro de la Programación del curso y su Evaluación,
Lectura previa y actualizada posteriormente de diversos periódicos ,televisión, videos, libros, revistas y páginas web y otras fuentes de Internet en relación con las diversas artes alternativas(Grafiti, Cibert-Art, Tunning-Art,etc…) y la dificultad de acceso a los medios de información para expresar opiniones , escritos, artículos etc, que muestren así las Barreras Expresivas que los alumnos sienten a la hora de valorar las situaciones sociales y estéticas que no les gustan en el medio urbano donde viven.
Como metodología se plantea la discusión abierta en grupo entre los alumnos para informarse entre ellos y con el profesor de los contenidos y realizar una organización en tres apartados: Un Coordinador de la actividad,3/4 reporteros-fotógrafos y 2 redactores. Entre todos ellos habrá reuniones para realizar una continuada valoración de los diferentes contenidos, trasmitiéndose entre ellos las páginas web encontradas por Internet y analizando los contenidos de estos.
2º- Diario Fotográfico personal-Colectivo a partir de:
a/Realización de fotografías digitales de las que se encargarán los ¨reporteros¨ que fotografíen y hagan las entrevistas necesarias a los autores de los grafitis y de las diferentes imágenes de Arte Urbano.
b/Selección y catalogación de todo tipo de fotos de intervenciones sobre el mobiliario urbano y paredes recogidas en el barrio, Madrid y Comunidad de Madrid.
c/Selección de imágenes recogidas por internet de blogs y páginas web, eligiéndose un contenido(político, social, deportivo etc…).
3º- Proyecto múltiple:A/Materialización de una imagen-Grafiti, cuya Temática sea decidida por el colectivo de coordinador-redactores-reporteros a partir de discusiones abiertas ,pero en la que primen las diferentes artes alternativas relacionadas con la crítica a los medios de comunicación y - o no- de nuestros cerebros.( a través de prensa, televisión e internet).El grafitero o grafiteros a realizar la imagen será seleccionado teniendo en cuenta su habilidad,estilo y madurez crítica.
B/Publicación de un Diario-Fanzine que explique de forma conjunta y abierta el desarrollo de las actividades ,así como artículos escritos por los alumnos que se comprometan dentro del Grupo de Redacción(redactores).
4º/Exposición en clase por parte del profesor y el Grupo de las diversas actividades y procesos realizadas durante la actividad,siguiendo también las explicaciones dadas por los reporteros, redactores y el Coordinador ,con imágenes digitales por ordenador proyectadas en clase, así como muestra de materiales como el fanzine.
CÓMO VALORO LOS TRABAJOS :
- Tengo muy en cuenta el Grado de implicación con el grupo por parte de cada uno de los alumnos y evaluación del dominio de los medios de expresión escrita y de creación de Blogs.También valoro la sucesiva progresión en la adopción de determinados criterios personales sobre los temas relacionados con las artes alternativas y su relación con las artes plásticas.Igualmente es muy importante para mi la Capa- cidad crítica y expresiva ante los diferentes enfoques y ante hechos concretos que suceden en la actualidad.
