The Amazonas: where trees won’t let you see the forest
Just 55USD plus taxes and half an hour of flight separates Quito from the city of Coca, starting point of the
trip the expeditionaries will do by the Napo River. Traveling on the same aquatic path that, in the search
of El Dorado, took the Spanish explorer Francisco Orellana to discover the Amazonas River in 1542, from
which Napo is an important branch.
After buying flashlights and refreshing with a natural coconut juice, the group starts a journey on a
motorboat for over an hour from Coca to the east, to get to what will be their hotel for the next four days:
The Manatee Amazon Explorer. This boat sails through the waters of Napo for 12 hours a day, towards
the Yasuní National Park, to get them closer to the wonders of the jungle. When the river is to low for the
Manatee to navigate, the group will take a little boat to explore the wildlife of the jungle. After day and night
itineraries they discover that, when the creatures of the day – like the spider monkey, parrots, striated heron,
macaws, cougar and jaguars- go to sleep, the stars of the night awake to fill with music the black curtain of
a jungle lighted by the stars, lighting bugs and the eyes of the caimans stealthily watching the boat passing
by only a few meters away.
