atmosféricas húmedas (noviembre a abril) y secas (mayo a octubre).
In 2011 the ice cover of Nevado Cololo was 42.02% lower than in 1975, these losses were
probably caused by increased of ablation processes.
INTRODUCTION
The ice masses of Nevado Cololo are representative of the Andean tropical
glaciers subject to alternations between humid (Novembre to April) and dry
(May to October) atmosfepheric conditions. This seasonality is defined by the
ITCZ latitudinal oscillation and disturbed by the no seasonal ENSO
phenomena. The positive phase, El Niño, contributes negatively to these
glaciers mass balances, as observed during the time periodo assessed.
METHODOLOGY
This work used TM/Landsat-5 imagery to determine the ice cover extent for the
years 1989, 1997, 2008 and 2011. These glaciers were delimited applying the
NDSI, wich uses the opposite spectral characteristics of icemasses in the
visible and near infrared region. Based on information from a topographic
chart, a DEM was generated using elevation points interpolated by ordinary
kriging geostatistical method.
RESULTS
In 2011, only 48 of 122 glaciers could be identified, compared to the year of
1975. Small glaciers (<0.1 km²) with low maximum elevations were the most
affected ones; and currently there are no glaciers bellow 4,626 m asl. The ice
covered 24.77 km² in 2011, an area 42.02% smaller than in 1975. Surface
loss occured in all slopes, regardless orientation, but glaciers facing east were
the most affected. Even the largest glacier, facing southwest, lost 21.6% of its
total area and its front retreat about 1 km during the 36 years analysed.
Proportionatelly, there was an increase in the number of glaciers whose
average slope is between 30º and 40º.
CONSIDERATIONS
The ice thickness reduction is highlighted through glaciers break up and
bedrock outcrops in their internal parts. Intensified ablation processes probably
caused these glaciers mass losses but further local climatic investigations are
needed.
