El soneto describe el deseo del poeta de que después de su muerte, la persona amada no llore por él ni recuerde su nombre, para evitarle sufrimiento. Pide que el amor de la persona persiste incluso después de su fallecimiento, pero que no exprese su dolor públicamente para no ser objeto de burla.
