participantes (justicia social, responsabilidad
ambiental)
5. ¿Hay una brecha digital que impide
colaboración entre ONGs?
◦ Acceso y uso de tecnología
6 meses aquí
36 encuestas y entrevistas

I am a communication scholar in area called organizational communication. That means I study how communication allows individuals and organizations to work together to achieve common goals. My particular area of focus is on interorganizational network, which describe groups of individuals or organizations that exchange information and resources, position themselves as aligned publicly, or have joint memberships, and that organize themselves so that their individual autonomy remains intact. These networks are self-governing and often self-organizing systems. Prior research and theory suggests that networks have advantages over hierarchies or markets, including adaptability, dynamism, versatility, and speed of innovation. I particularly study network that included nongovernmental organizations. In these studies, I frequently find the pattern on the screen. In this study HIV/AIDS international NGOs are most densely located in North America and Western Europe. These two networks are densely connected. However, when one looks at other regions, especially for the purposes of this talk, we see another pattern. The international NGOs in these regions are connected to NGOs in other parts of the world, but not to each other. This pattern bears out in studies of infectious disease, third world development, and in sustainable development.
Interesting, you might say, but so what? What does it mean that NGOs in South and Central America don’t seem to be as densely connected. Well, without going into citations related to collective action and dependency theories, here are a few highlights of the problem.Without interorganizational connections, the potential for duplication of services between NGOs is probable. What this means is that NGOs are most likely inefficiently working toward a solution because they have duplicate overhead costs.Unhealthy competition is created among NGOs who compete for resources but have not realm of cooperation. This means that organizations often seeks to optimize their own survival and programs at the determinant of the benefits for the whole.Because organizations are operating independently, they are often re-creating knowledge that exists within the social system. This means that in areas where resources are scarce, they are being wasted to create knowledge that could be accessed from others in the system.
Global north and global south = different levels of collaborations, scholars don’t know why. This study demonstrates that it’s not for lack of desire; orgs we interviewed absolutely see the reasons for collaboration and in many cases were collaborating. They also had basic internet skills and most had access (except for very rural groups). So we’re not exactly sure why they’re not using tech to work together more. Collaborative aspirations not satisfied. Specific skills (individuals) and infrastructure (system) necessary for online collaborations not had.
