El documento describe el proceso de viajar en avión desde la compra del boleto en línea hasta el abordaje. 1. En el aeropuerto

Hoy me encuentro en el aeropuerto aquí en Gran Canaria de vuelta al Reino Unido
y, ya que mi vuelo parece que se ha retrasado un poco, he pensado que podría
aprovechar para escribir un poco sobre cosas relacionadas con los aeropuertos.
Today I’m at Gran Canaria airport, back to the United Kingdom and, given that my
flight seems to be a bit delayed, I thought I could take the chance to write a bit
about stuff related to airports

Como no se me da muy bien hablar espontáneamente, lo primero que hago siem-
pre es concentrarme en escribir el texto pensando un poco en cómo les diría las
cosas si les estuviera hablando directamente… no sé si me entienden.
Given that I’m not very good at talking spontaneously, the first thing I always do is
focusing on writing the text but kind of thinking how I would tell you the stuff if I was
speaking to you directly, if that makes sense
Me parece que así es al menos un poco más natural y ustedes pueden aprender
un poco mejor lo que son expresiones o el lenguaje hablado
I think this way may feel a bit more natural and you can learn a bit better the ex-
pressions and spoken language
Se los digo por si les extraña un poco que a veces no ponga alguna coma o diga
muchas cosas seguidas en una misma frase. En cualquier caso, siempre intento
que la lectura del texto en sí tampoco les sea difícil.
I’m telling you this in case you were wondering why sometimes I miss a comma or
say a lot of things in a row in the same sentence. In any case, I always try to make
the reading of the text itself not difficult for you.

2. Yo soy el primero al que no le gusta un texto con faltas de ortografía o con signos
de puntuación sin mucho sentido, así que al principio me costó un poco hacerlo
así. Pero creo que a ustedes les viene mejor y eso es lo importante.
I’m the first one that doesn’t like a text with misspellings or punctuation signs with
no much sense, so at the beginning I struggle a bit to do it like that. But I think that
would benefit you and that is what’s important.
A lo que iba. Estoy aquí en el aeropuerto de Gran Canaria, tranquilo, en una zona
donde no hay mucha gente alrededor. Me puse los auriculares para escuchar un
poco de música relajante mientras escribo esto.
As I was saying, I’m here at Gran Canaria airport, calm, in an area where there is
no much people around. I put my headphones on to listen to a bit of relaxing music
while I write this
La aplicación que uso para escribir tiene una opción "zen" que te ayuda a escribir
sin distracciones. Se llama "Focused", por si les interesa algo parecido.
The app I use to write has got a “zen” option that helps you to write without distrac-
tions. It’s called “Focused”, in case you’re interested in something similar

He pensado que igual les parece interesante que les describa el proceso desde
que compras un billete hasta que embarcas en el avión.
Ok, so, I don’t want to go on and on and make this article too long. I thought you
may find interesting that I describe you the process from when you buying a flight
ticket to the moment you embark in the plane
Es muy habitual estos días comprar los billetes online. Es lo que yo hago siempre.
No recuerdo la última vez que compré un billete en una agencia de viajes. Hay
páginas web en las que pones los datos y ellas te buscan los vuelos más baratos.
It’s very common these days to buy the tickets online. That’s what I always do. I
can’t remember the last time I bought a ticket in a travel agency. There are web
pages where you put your preferences and they search for the cheapest flights
Les hablo de aplicaciones tipo SkyScanner, por ejemplo. Yo suelo echarle un ojo a
esta página pero también me gusta ir a las páginas de las compañías directa-
mente, porque muchas veces tienen mejores precios.
I’m talking about apps like SkyScanner, por example. I usually have a look at this
webpage but I also like to go directly to the company’s webpage, because a lot of
times they have better prices
Sea cual sea la página que elijan, siempre te piden que introduzcas la fecha de
ida, la fecha de vuelta y el número de pasajeros. Si solo quieres el billete de ida
normalmente hay una opción "solo ida" que debes seleccionar.

3. Whatever webpage you choose, they always ask you to introduce the inbound and
return date as well as the number of passengers. If you only want the inbound tick-
et there is normally a “one way” option that you must select
Aprovecho para decirles, a los más avanzados, que la palabra "solo" nunca lleva
tilde (hace unos años la llevaba en ciertas ocasiones pero ahora nunca).
I take the chance to tell you, the more advanced ones, that the word “solo” is never
written with the tilde (a few years ago it did on certain situations, but not anymore)
Muchas veces también tienes la posibilidad de elegir una opción tipo "soy flexible".
Yo siempre lo hago porque, luego, te pondrá el vuelo que te interesa no solo en el
día concreto que pusiste, sino también unos días antes y unos días después.
A lot of times you also have the possibility of choosing an option such as “I’m flexi-
ble”. I always do this because, later on, it will show you the flight you’re interested
not only in the specific day you applied for, but also a few days before and a few
days later
Esto está bien ya que, si puedes, puedes ir un día antes o un día después si es
más barato.

cómodo es hacer el check-in online.
You make the payment and they normally confirm the booking by sending you an
email (in Spain it’s common to say the word email as well). After that, for me it’s
more convenient to do the check-in online
Lo hago online sobre todo porque normalmente viajo solo con equipaje de mano,
por lo que no tengo que facturar nada y hacer cola para sacar la tarjeta de em-
barque.
I do it online specially because normally I travel only with hand baggage, so I don’t
need to check in anything and be in any queue to get the boarding pass
Así que hago el check-in online, que normalmente puedes hacerlo entre siete días
antes de tu vuelo y seis horas antes del mismo, más o menos. Esto de las seis ho-
ras lo he aprendido hoy, de hecho.

4. So I do the check-in online, which normally you can do between seven days before
your flight and six hours before it, more or less. This thing about the six hours it’s
something I’ve learnt today, in fact.
Fui a hacer el check-in online en casa, como siempre, pero el sistema no me deja-
ba. Investigando un poco me di cuenta de que faltaban menos de seis horas para
el vuelo…
I was going to do the check-in online at home, as usual, but the system wouldn't let
me. Investigating a bit I realised that it was less than six hours for my flight…
Pero bueno, aunque había una cola bastante larga en el mostrador de facturación,
no se me hizo muy larga la espera. Me entretuve con mis flashcards para aprender
italiano.
Anyways, even though there was quite a long queue in the check-in desk, it didn’t
feel like a long wait. I whiled away the time with my flashcards to learn italian
El mostrador de facturación es donde facturas el equipaje y te dan la tarjeta de
embarque si no lo has hecho online. Obviamente tienes que presentar el pas-
aporte o DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad). Yo también le mostré mi reserva,
que había impreso en casa, pero no sé si esto es necesario realmente.
The check-in desk is where you check in your baggage and they give you the
boarding pass if you haven’t done it online. Obviously, you have to show your
passport or DNI (National Identity Document, id card in Spain). I also showed her
my reservation, which I had printed at home, but I’m not sure whether this is neces-
sary really
Una vez haces todo esto, entonces es cuando tienes que pasar por el control de
seguridad, donde el personal te pide normalmente que te quites el cinturón y pon-
gas todos los objetos metálicos y electrónicos en una bandeja.
Once you do all this, then it’s when you have to pass the security check, where the
staff request you to take off your belt and put all your metallic and electronic ob-
jects in a tray
Como seguramente sabrán, también hay una restricción en los líquidos que
puedes llevar, que es, si no me equivoco, cien mililitros por botella o recipiente.
As you probably know, there’s also a restriction on the liquids you can carry, which
is, if I’m right, one hundred mils per bottle or container
Pasas el control de seguridad, colocas las cosas que tuviste que sacar en la
mochila otra vez, y luego he visto que en muchos aeropuertos te hacen pasar por
una especie de pasillo en el que puedes comprar desde chocolate hasta per-
fumes o llaveros.
You go through the security check, you put away the stuff you had to take out back
into the backpack, and then I’ve seen that in many airports you have to go through
some kind of corridor where you can buy from chocolate to perfumes or key ring

5. Llama bastante la atención, porque normalmente son sitios muy muy comerciales
por los que prácticamente te obligan a pasar. Pero bueno, en mi experiencia,
aparte de lo llamativo que resulta todo, no son especialmente agresivos con las
ventas.
It’s interesting, because normally they’re very very commercial sort of places which
they practically force you to go through. But anyways, in my experience, aside from
the flashy everything is, they’re not particularly aggressive with the sellings.
Ya pasada esta zona lo que se suele hacer es buscar un panel de información
para ver a qué puerta de embarque debemos dirigirnos. Ahora mismo estoy sen-
tado enfrente de uno de ellos y esta tiene 5 columnas: Hora, Vuelo, Destino, Puerta
y Observaciones.
Once you’ve gone past that area what people usually do is look for an information
board to find out which boarding gate we must head to. Right now I’m sitting in
front of one of them and this one has 5 columns: Time, Flight, Destination, Gate and
Observations
Lo van cambiando a otros idiomas de todas formas, así que no tendrían ningún
problema para entenderlo. Obviamente si están escuchando esto y están motiva-
dos con el español querrán leerlo todo en español. ¡Por supuesto!
They keep changing it to other languages, so you wouldn’t have any problem to
understand it. Obviously if you’re listening to this and you’re motivated with your
Spanish you will want to read everything in Spanish. Of course!
En "Hora" te ponen la hora a la que el vuelo está programado. En "Observaciones"
te pone si el vuelo está retrasado, si ya abrieron la puerta de embarque o a qué
hora la abren. En mi caso, pone "Estimado a las diez y treinta y cinco (22:35)”
In “Time” they put the time when the flight is scheduled. In “Observations” whether
the flight is delayed, whether the gate is already opened or at what time they’ll
open it. In my case, it says “Estimated to 22:35”
Si vienen a este aeropuerto tienen que tener cuidado porque no te avisan por
megafonía de las horas de embarque. Lo cual yo agradezco muchísimo, sobre
todo si tienes que esperar muchas horas… (con suerte no será mi caso)
If you come to this airport you have to be careful because they don’t announce
over the loudspeaker about the boarding times. Which I really appreciate, specially
if you have to wait many hours… (hopefully it will not be my case)
Esto te lo avisan de todas formas. Como curiosidad les pongo el audio que acabo
de grabar :) "Aviso importante. Por favor, esté atento a la información mostrada en
los monitores. Por la megafonía de este aeropuerto, no se realizan llamadas de
embarque".
They let you know about that anyways. Just out of curiosity I’ll play the audio I’ve

6. played in the information boards. Through the loudspeakers of this airport, we don’t
announce boarding calls”
Dice "monitores", pero en mi experiencia creo que es más común decir "paneles
de información".
It says “monitores” (for information boards), but in my experience it’s more common
to say “paneles de información”
También tienen algún que otro aviso como el de que estés atento a tus pertenen-
cias para que no te las roben.
They also have a few other notices such as the one warning you to be on the look-
out for your belongings so that nobody steal them from you.
¡Bueno! Veo que el monitor (o panel de información) acaba de cambiar justo aho-
ra. Dice "embarque", lo cual quiere decir que tengo que ir apagando el ordenador
y dirigirme a mi puerta de embarque.
Alright! I’m just seeing that the information board changed just now. It says “board-
ing”, which means I have to be shutting down the computer and head to my board-
ing gate.
¡He acabado justo a tiempo! Aunque ahora me queda traducirles el texto, preparar
el audio, crear las flashcards y dejarlo todo bien bonito y agradable de ver para
ustedes, por supuesto.
I’ve finished just in time! But now I’ll need to translate the text, prepare the audio,
create the flashcards and leave everything nice and pretty for you, of course.
