Vocabulario Mapas Mentales
1. Vocabulario y Mapas Mentales
The other day I was thinking about ideas for posts to publish on the site, I thought I
could write or preparar a list with words that are very similar in English and in Span-
ish
I searched through the internet to see what I found, in order to offer you something
different, and in fact I came across a few posts with a very thorough list
vocabulario?
However, a little while after sitting down to write, I thought... "does it really make
sense to make this list?", "is this how I would really recommend to study vocabu-
lary?"
usando :)
*Before carrying on, let me tell you a quick note. In this post I'm going to talk to
you, in plural; just in case you feel like taking notes on the verbal tenses I'll be us-
ing
Well, in response to the previous question, the answer is clearly no. At least in my
experience, studying lists of words without a context where you can locate them is
a waste of time

I don't want to be seem like a very close-minded person. Like I always say, each
person is different and each and every one of you will have your own technique. Or
techniques, depending on the goals and time available
If maybe you're studying against the clock for a Spanish exam that you desperately
need to pass, maybe you prefer to go all out to memorize the list, throw it all at the
exam and the forget all you've learnt...
ioma.
But this is clearly not the best advice is you really want to learn Spanish to commu-
nicate and enjoy chatting with people that speak that language
Then, today I wanted to bring up the topic of mind maps and the potential of relat-
ing words with each other or classifying them by a certain pattern
But before carrying on I wanted to ask you one thing. How important is vocabulary
in itself for you when you're learning a language, Spanish in this case?
There is a podcast I listen to quite a lot, The Actual Fluency Podcast, with Chris
Broholm, where he interviews people passionate about learning languages (nor-
mally people that speak minimum 3 languages!)
In this podcast the topic of what's more important, whether it's grammar or vocabu-
lary and things like that, usually comes up. And something many of them seem to
agree is that they give more weight to vocabulary
This is definitely very interesting, as it certainly goes against what in many schools
and language academies is taught
Take in mind that when we talk about vocabulary we're not only talking about indi-
vidual words. We also include expressions, set phrases or words that usually go
together, among other examples
siones?
The question is, is there any ideal method to study these words or expressions?
In my opinion, mind maps can help us a lot in this task. A mind map is, according
to Wikipedia, "a diagram used used to represent words, ideas, tasks, pictures, or
other concepts linked with each other and placed around a key word or central
idea”
Then, it says that "mind maps are a very efficient method to extract and memorize
information
While there are times you can find mind maps related to specific vocabulary on the
internet, like these examples, I think that the true strength of this technique lies in
making the mind maps by oneself
mapas mentales.
For example, if you're going to Spanish classes, wherever, and in one of the
lessons you've talked about objects you can find in a room, you can take the
4. chance you've got those new words fresh in your mind to make your own mind
maps
If could be only with words or also pictures if maybe you're better at learning in a
more visual way. The very fact of creating this mind map will help you to structure
that information in your mind and then spill it onto paper in a clean and tidy way
It's as if you were pushing yourselves to put order to those new concepts that you
have floating somewhere in your brain
Something similar happens when you try to look for something in your room, for ex-
ample your car keys (or whatever). You probably agree that, when the room is tidy,
you normally go just for it
Sin embargo, cuando todo está patas arriba... ¡a ver quién las encuentra!
However, when everything is upside down... let's see who find them!
Think of a library or a data base. How would we manage if you had to extract a
piece of data or a book and these were not classified somehow?
Mind maps let us do precisely that. Being able to extract that information from our
brains with much more efficiency
And if on top of that we make them ourselves, in line with our natural way to see
and organize information, much better. In my opinion, that's time well invested and
the benefits will speak for themselves
